19 goals in 7 fixtures as New Premier League Season begin
The English premier league season kicked off with an intriguing goal fest with a total of __ goals recorded in the seven fixtures; with two games ending 5-0 and another 3-0.
Swansea gave the shocker of the day when they trashed hosts Queens Park Rangers 5-0. Mark Hughes had taken all summer to assemble a number of experienced professionals with former Chelsea man Jose Bosingwa being the lattest player to move to Lotus Road. Liverpool were the biggest side to lose on the opening day also. Despite a flurry of chances, West Bromich Albion now managed by former Assistant manager at Liverpool missed a penalty but converted another to slot three goals past the reds. Daniel Agger got the first red card of the Premier League season when he gifted West Brom the first penalty which Reina saved. Chelsea striker on loan to West Brom got the third goal that secured three points for the hosts.
A Van Persie-less Arsenal could not break a resilient Sunderland defence on a frustrating afternoon at the Emirates. The new signings gave a good account of themselves but neither Podolski nor Giroud could take any of the chances Santi Carzola created time and time again.
Reading and Stoke shared the spoils as they ended their game at the Majeski stadium one goal each. The last game of the day was a 17:30 fixture between Newcastle and Tottenham. The Spurs led by former Chelsea manager Andrea Villas Boas were the better side in the first half but could not take advantage of their chances. Ba then put Newcastle ahead but Jermaine Defoe continued his goal scoring form by equalizing for Spurs. Hatem Ben Arfa then converted for Newcastle after Lennon had conceded a penalty.
Chelsea play Wigan on Sunday while Southampton will be looking to spoil the Manchester City party when they visit the Eastlands later on Sunday. Challengers Manchester United play Everton Monday.
