Given quits International football
After becoming his country’s most capped players, goal keeper Shay Given has hung his boots on the International stage for his country Republic of Ireland.
The former Manchester City stopper feels the time is ripe to bow out of the international scene after winning 125 caps for his country which he accomplished in 16 years.
“I have dedicated 16 years of my life to my country and I have a great affinity with Giovanni Trapattoni’s squad,” he added. I’d like to thank Giovanni, Marco (Tardelli) and Alan Kelly for their support during my time with the team.
“I will continue to be Ireland’s biggest fan and wish the lads well as they embark upon their new campaign.”
Given made his international debut during a 2 nil loss to Russia as a 19 year old and immediately became favourite to replace Paddy Bonner.
Given stood reliably in goal for his country all these years but his undisputed talent was powerless in stopping exits on the international stage for his country.
Despite making the announcement of his retirement, Given has opened the back door making himself available for future emergencies for the National team according to the Football Association of Ireland.
Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni had a lengthy meeting with Given prior to the announcement. He would later shower praises on the goalkeeper for his contributions during his 16-year international career.
“I understand the difficult decision that Shay had to make and appreciate all of his efforts during his international career,” said the Republic manager. “He is a strong player with a great character and his love of playing for his country always shone through.
“It has been a pleasure to work with him during my time with the team. I wish him the very best in his future.”
Shay Given remains Irelands most capped player to date with 125 caps. He is followed by Robbie Keane who has 120 caps. Kelvin Kilbane and
Steve Staunton both have 110 caps and 102 caps respectively.
