Van Persie heads to Manchester United
The news that most Arsenal fans wished it never came filtered in Wednesday night that captain Robin Van Persie is making a move to Manchester United in a deal believed to be worth £24m.
Van Persie’s heroics last season automatically put him in high demands making him opne of the most sought after strikers in the world. The Arsenal faithful hoped that their 30 league goal striker would renew his contract with just one year left but he initially put off contract talks till after the season.
After an abysmal campaign with the Dutch National team at the Euros, Van Persie released a statement on July 4th declaring that he would not be renewing his contract with the club. The statement spurred reactions from various quarters and a number of suitors came knocking.
Manchester United, City rivals Manchester City and Italian giants Juventus were all believed to be in the hunt of the 29 year old. Arsenal reportedly held on for a reported $25m - £30m butit appeared no one was that keen in buying a 29 year old who would be free in six months that amount.
But as City and Juventus waned in their pursuit of the Dutch striker, Manchester United pushed on and Wednesday evening released a statement on their website;
“Manchester United is pleased to announce it has reached agreement with Arsenal Football Club for the transfer of Robin van Persie,” the statement read. The deal is subject to a medical and the agreement of personal terms. A further announcement will be made in due course.”
Arsenal also released a similar one; “Arsenal Football Club can confirm that terms have been agreed for the transfer of Robin van Persie to Manchester United. Van Persie will travel to Manchester on Thursday in order to agree personal terms and complete a medical ahead of the proposed move”.
Arsenal have already bolstered their ranks with the signings of Germany International; Lukas Podolski, Montpellier striker Oliver Giroud and Spanish International Santi Carzola.
