Andy Murray’s mum backs him for greater heights
Judy Murray the Mother of Tennis Star Andy Murray believes her son’s heroics at the Olympics will drive him further to win even more trophies in the future. Judy Murray said his outstanding performance has helped change perceptions the public have of her son.
“I think there was a huge wave of love and support from the public; they understood how much it meant to him, how hard he’s worked for it. I think what he realized is that everybody is warming to you, it doesn’t matter whether you’ve won or not. And I really do think that that helped him a lot, to feel like the public was really behind him”
“When it got into the Olympics, the home Olympics, and the crowd was very, very much for the British players, I think that really did lift him.”
Murray won the Gold medal at the London Olympics, beating Roger Federer the man who beat him at the finals of the Wimbledon Open few weeks to the Olympics. She says his triumph will give him the needed belief to even get to greater heights.
“He will certainly go into the slams now with belief he can get over the final hurdle having done it once [at the Olympics].”
Judy laughed off claims that she might be seen as a grumpy or a pushy mother.
“I’m not grumpy and I’m not a pushy parent. And it is tough sometimes, you read people saying things about you and you think, I don’t know these people and they don’t know anything about our life at all, and they’re just coming out with some opinion which is wrong and is disappointing.”
“But I think anyone who knows me knows I have a great relationship with the boys. I understand their tennis. I probably go to six or seven tournaments a year; I’m certainly not following them round the world telling them what to do.”
Murray added: “The boys always loved sport, that’s the root of it, the love of the game. They loved tennis but they loved other things as well. Andy loved football in particular, Jamie loved golf and they both became very good at both of those sports as well.
“So for me it was about trying to create opportunities for them to continue to progress in the sports that they’d chosen.”
Andy Murray heads to the US Open slated for later this month with the bullish confidence of his mother’s remarks ringing loud in his ears.
