The Dark Knight Rises still number One at box office

The Dark Knight Rises remained top of the bunch at the box office for the second weekend consecutively netting in just over $64 million. However it is still behind its predecessor, 2008′s The Dark Knight.

The concluding part of the Batman trilogy has now netted in the excess of $289 million with only 10 days gone in its stay in the theatres. It however fell short of the $160.9 million it made in its opening weekend.

Warner Bros head of distribution, Dan Fellman, would not comment on the movie’s estimate in respect of the victims of the infamous Colorado massacre than killed 12 people and injured 58 others on opening night.

That notwithstanding, people are still going to the movies as last weekend’s records show. Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian said what could have hurt the numbers would be the Friday night’s Olympic opening ceremony that drew a record-setting 40.7 million viewers in the US.

“For a film that opened as big as this did, considering the situation and what happened last weekend and all that, I would say this is a very strong showing,” Dergarabedian said. “It’s made almost $300 million in North America and its mid-week (attendance) is very strong. It made $19 million last Monday.”

Ice Age: Continental Drift came second despite this being its third week. It made $13.3 million for a domestic total of nearly $114.9 million. The Watch came third with $13 million. No. 4 with $11.8 million was Step Up Revolution.

Others in limited release that made wave includes Ruby Sparks which grossed $151,881 in 13 theaters for a strong per-screen average of $11,683. Since its opening on Wednesday, it’s made $191,717.

And LD Entertainment’s Killer Joe, the NC-17-rated crime thriller from director William Friedkin, made $37,864 at three theaters in Manhattan averaging $12,621 per-screen.

Matthew McConaughey In his darkest performance yet, stars as a Dallas police detective with a side gig as a hit man. The movie also stars Emile Hirsch, Thomas Haden Church, Gina Gershon and Juno Temple
