MI win could have lasting impact for Larson

Brad Keselowski qualifies for the NASCAR Cup Series auto race in Brooklyn Mich. Friday Aug. 11 2017. Keselowski won the pole

Kyle Larson slipped between cars on an overtime restart, capping his wild weekend with a victory in Sunday's NASCAR Cup Series race at Michigan International Speedway.

The race went into overtime as the result of a Michael McDowell-Paul Menard wreck on lap 195 that brought out the yellow flag for the fifth time in the race and, then, the red flag for extensive track clean-up. Erik Jones, Truex's Furniture Row Racing teammate, was third. But those were the two most important laps, as he moved from fourth to first after the green flag restarted the race on lap 200. Kyle Busch won the Xfinity race on Saturday, but a pit miscue and an altercation with Brad Keselowski at the inner loop killed his chances at a sweep. The aforementioned Truex Jr. led 57 laps on the day.

Daniel Suarez stayed out during the caution at the end of the first stage to inherit the lead. When that cycle completed near the end of the second stage, Truex was up front and Keselowski in second.

While it's Larson's third-straight win at MI, it's his second-straight thanks to late-race restart excellence.

It was Larson's fourth career Cup victory and ended a mini-slump in which he had finished out of the top 20 in three straight races. Ricky Stenhouse Jr.'s vehicle also sustained practice damage, but his team was able to make repairs.

He has won the last three Cup races at MIS, the first driver to do that since Bill Elliott, who won four straight from 1985-86.
