Hackers leak email indicating HBO has agreed to negotiate and pay $250000

HBO offers $250000 as 'bounty payment' to hackers: Variety

A person familiar with HBO's response to the attack told Reuters that the company sent the email "as a stall tactic" and had never meant to make the $250,000 payment or pay the full $6 million the hackers had demanded to hold off going public with data stolen from HBO.

The attack came at a sensitive time for HBO: Parent Time Warner is seeking regulatory approval to sell itself to AT&T Inc (T.N) in an $85.4 billion deal announced in October.

Hackers who broke into HBO's cyber security system are not backing down.

HBO offered a reward of $250,000 in response to a data breach at the television group that produces "Game of Thrones", according to a report from a leaked memo.

The latest dump also includes Sunday night's episode of Insecure and what appear to be episodes of other lower-profile shows, including Ballers, the unaired shows Barry and The Deuce, a comedy special and other programming.

US Stock Futures Pull Back On Rising North Korea Tensions
The dollar-denominated RTS index was down 1.5 percent at 1,013 points as of 0834 GMT, taking its year-to-date loss to 12 percent. The U.S. equity market is hovering near record levels and volume has been tepid following the onset of summer.

The hackers last released HBO data two days ago, when they published the home addresses and phone numbers belonging to some Game of Thrones stars. Other channel heads think that this could be a motivation for other hackers to make a move on data leaks and earning quick money.

"You have the advantage of having surprised us", reads the email, which Variety said was sent by an HBO technology team member on July 27.

It is plausible that HBO will decide to not cooperate with the hackers considering there's no guarantee the group won't demand further ransom payments or still release the scripts for the show.

However, in the video letter by the hacker, it demanded a payment equivalent to "six months salary". Unsurprisingly, their targets included one of HBO's biggest shows ever - "Game of Thrones". The email indicates a negotiation between the network and the hackers.

Till now, HBO has yet not released any official statement or stance on this situation but according to some journalists, the data has been leaked and HBO is trying to buy some time by using delaying tactics.
