Washington Nationals star Bryce Harper suffers ugly-looking knee injury

Giants-Nationals game rained out

Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper left the first inning of Saturday's game with an apparent knee injury. His leg buckled, he went airborne and fell to the ground as his helmet went flying.

Saturday's game started after a three-hour rain delay in D.C., and it's unclear how much the damp conditions affected the basepaths. Harper was not putting any weight on his leg. It was still raining when Harper's injury happened.

Edwin Jackson (2-2, 3.75 ERA with Washington) of the Nationals was slated to face Chris Stratton (0-2, 6.63 ERA) of the Giants in the pitching matchup Friday.

Harper slipped on the bag, had to be helped off field.

He is among the National League's leaders in batting average, home runs and RBIs this season.

The 24-year-old is as fearsome a hitter as anyone in the sport, reaching the All-Star Game in four of his first five seasons.

Because of a bevy of injuries, the Nationals have used 12 outfielders this season.

Harper is under contract through next season and can be a free agent in the winter of 2018.
