United States warns North Korea to avoid destruction of its people

In July, North Korea said it would "strike a merciless blow" at the United States if Washington ever attempted to remove Kim from power.

Matthew Rycroft told reporters at United Nations headquarters in NY that the USA and UK have been very clear in demanding a halt to North Korea's nuclear and missile programmes.

Tension in the region has risen since the reclusive North, which staged two nuclear bomb tests past year and launched two intercontinental ballistic missile tests in July in defiance of world powers.

However, he said, he is responsible for having military options.

The State Department is holding a briefing a day after it was revealed North Korea has miniaturized nuclear warheads for use in ballistic missiles, leading to an exchange of threats between the US and the Kim Jong Un regime.

"The DPRK must choose to stop isolating itself and stand down its pursuit of nuclear weapons", Mattis said.

"My portfolio, my mission, my responsibility is to have military options if you need it", Mattis told reporters at a Defense Innovation Unit Experimental (DIUx) event in Mountain View, California, in his first remarks since North Korea threatened to launch missiles near Guam.

Prior to the 2016 season, he stepped down as Senators GM to take on an advisory role in the organization during his treatment. There was no hope for a cure, only to prolong his life for as long as comfortably possible via chemotherapy.

President Donald Trump again stepped up the rhetoric against North Korea on Thursday, saying an earlier threat to unleash "fire and fury" on Pyongyang if it launched an attack was not tough enough.

Trump has said he would not allow Pyongyang to develop a nuclear weapon capable of hitting the United States.

Meanwhile, France is urging all sides "to act responsibly and to de-escalate" tensions over North Korea's nuclear ambitions.

He pointed out that the UN Security Council unanimously voted last week to characterize North Korea's statements as a "threat to the world's community".

The two discussed responses to North Korean provocations and the security situation on the Korean peninsula, he said.

The last conflict between the USA and the DPRK, known in the U.S.as the "Korean War", resulted in massive infrastructure damage in North Korea, and the death of almost a third of their population.
