Safety Regulators Issue Safety Alert For Still-Popular Fidget Spinners

The fires involved Bluetooth-enabled fidget spinners that connect to a smartphone and play music while they spin, but need to be charged.

Following news of at least one fidget spinner exploding, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a statement of caution surrounding the popular toy. If their recommendations on the obsolescing toy seem uninspired, well, we've been here before.

Additionally, because the CPSC says it is aware of choking incidents involving children up to age 14, the agency recommends warning children of all ages not to put fidget spinners or the gadgets' small pieces in their mouths. The most notable of these accidents happened in May, when a 10-year-old girl from Texas needed surgery to remove a bearing from her throat.

Unfortunately, little oversight has resulted in a bunch of generic electronic fidget spinners hitting the market, some with questionable origins and build quality.

Be prepared to watch the solar eclipse safely
And for many across the continent, they will get to see it in full totality - when the moon completely blocks out the sun . NASA has released a map to find out the exact time and how long it will last wherever you are along the path of totality .

The CPSC listed ways to ensure the toy is being used safely. Just make sure not to mistake it for a snack.

If a fidget spinner is aimed at children aged 12 or younger, then it needs to adhere to US Toy Standard ASTM F963-16.

"Like any battery-operated product, consumers should be present and pay attention to their devices while charging them", CPSC Acting Chairman Ann Marie Buerkle said in a statement. According to the agency, fidget spinners can break and release small pieces that can cause choking hazards. I'm not exaggerating: One of the CPSC's safety tips is to check that you have working smoke detectors if you have fidget spinners with batteries in your house.

It is also not recommended to leave battery-operated fidget spinners charging overnight and users should only use the cable that came with the product. And that poses a problem, because if there's a battery inside a thing, that thing can catch fire when you least expect it.
