Himachal Pradesh landslide: 12 bodies recovered, PM condoles loss of lives

Mandi Pathankot National Highway massive landslides debris rescue operations

At least six persons were killed and many are feared trapped in a massive landslide in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh on Sunday morning, an official said.

The coaches had stopped for a tea break around midnight Saturday in Himachal Pradesh when tonnes of rock and mud swept away an entire stretch of highway roughly 200 kilometres (124 miles) from the state capital Shimla. Indian Army personnel and members of the NDRF have been called for fast execution of the rescue operations.

Following the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated: "Pained by the loss of lives due to landslide related accidents in HP's Mandi district".

One of the buses was travelling to Chamba from Manali while the other was travelling to Katra in Jammu from Manali when the landslide occurred. People present on the spot said the rescue operation was affected by rains.

Meanwhile, Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda also tweeted, "Deeply saddened to know about this unfortunate accident at Padhar on Mandi NH, Himachal Pradesh.My prayers are with the families of victims". The police said the two buses were parked on the highway while the passengers were out for snacks just before the landslide happened. "The relief announcement will be done by the Government as per the schedule", Singh told ANI.
