Cowboys' Ezekiel Elliott 'surprised and disappointed' by National Football League suspension

NFL rookie quarterbacks shine in preseason debuts

- Mike Leslie (@MikeLeslieWFAA) August 11, 2017Elliott & reps statement: "In the coming weeks. a slew of additional credible and controverting evidence will come to light".

"I recognize the distraction and disruption that all of this has caused my family, friends, teammates, the Dallas Cowboys organization as well as my fans - for that I am sincerely sorry".

The 2016 National Football League rushing leader was suspended despite prosecutors in Columbus, Ohio, deciding a year ago not to pursue the case involving Elliott's girlfriend at the time in the same city where he starred for Ohio State.

As a result of the suspension, the guarantees in the four-year, $24.956 million deal Elliott signed with Dallas in 2016 will be voided, according to ESPN. Elliott & his reps are "extremely disappointed". The NFL looked into the case, but couldn't come to any conclusions.

Elliott has three days from receipt of the letter to file an appeal, and assuming he does so, he will have a hearing within 10 days of his filing.

Charlottesville car crash suspect ID'd as 20-year-old Ohio man
His alleged action led to the death of a yet to be identified 32 year old woman and several critical injuries. James Alex Fields, Junior of OH is charged with second degree murder, malicious wounding and hit and run.

Elliott plans to appeal the suspension, his representatives said in a statement. Elliott was subject to the league's personal conduct policy for allegedly breaking the nose of a DJ at a Dallas nightclub.

Since then, Elliott has been recorded pulling a woman's shirt down at a St. Patrick's Day Parade and been involved in an incident at a bar that left a man hospitalized.

If the NFL determines that there is enough evidence that Elliott was responsible for the punch, there is a chance the Cowboys running back could face further league discipline.

Schefter also reported Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is "furious" with the ruling.

The former Ohio State Buckeye led the National Football League in rushing last season with 1,631 yards in addition to 15 touchdowns.
