BBCI: North Korea: No imminent threat of nuclear war, says Central Intelligence Agency chief

CIA Director Mike Pompeo says nuclear war with North Korea is not 'imminent'

"The Cubans are there; the Russians are there, the Iranians, Hezbollah are there", he said on "Fox News Sunday".

"I'm quite confident that he will continue to try to develop his missile program, so it wouldn't surprise me if there was another missile test", Pompeo said.

"It is probably fair to say that they are moving towards that at an ever alarming rate".

In a separate interview on ABC News, Trump's national security adviser, H.R. McMaster, struck a similar tone.

Senior U.S. national security officials said Sunday that a military confrontation with North Korea's is not imminent, but they cautioned that the possibility of war is greater than it was a decade ago.

As of late Thursday, two US officials said the threat with regards to North Korea had not changed, additional assets were not being moved into the region and intelligence did not show indications of North Korea preparing a missile launch.

"I've seen no intelligence to indicate we're in that place today", Pompeo said.

Clapper said on CNN that the rhetoric was having a destabilizing affect and could cause North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to decide to lash out.

President Trump wrote on Twitter on Friday that U.S.

"Trump is driving the situation on the Korean peninsula to the brink of a nuclear war, making such outcries as 'the US will not rule out a war against the DPRK (North Korea),'" KCNA said. "President Trump has made it clear that it is his intention to protect the American people".

Clapper called for a change in approach with North Korea in "accepting" the dictatorship as a nuclear power and merely attempting to "cap it or control it".

U.S. President Donald Trump has made clear how the U.S. will respond to North Korea's provocations, and hopefully, the regime will understand, Pompeo added.

A Chinese state-run newspaper said on Friday that China should remain neutral if North Korea launches an attack that threatens the United States, sounding a warning for Pyongyang over its plans to fire missiles near Guam.

"When I served in Korea many years ago as the director of intelligence US forces in Korea, what I was anxious about was an incendiary event getting out of hand", Clapper added.

North Korea warned foreign diplomats to leave Pyongyang in 2013 when it suspended work at a joint inter-Korean industrial park and threatened missile strikes on U.S. Pacific bases, notably in Guam and Hawaii.
