Trump to direct Lighthizer to assess Chinese intellectual property practices

Trump speaks to reporters after a security briefing at his golf estate in Bedminster New Jersey

Xi, in his phone conversation with Trump, urged calm.

President Donald Trump will start the beginning steps Monday of a long awaited crackdown on Chinese intellectual property practices, administration officials told reporters Saturday. "If China helps us, I feel a lot different toward trade".

President Trump plans to get tougher on trade with China. "An important question going forward will be whether US companies and trade associations who have highlighted the problem will actually come forward and assist our government in the investigation or whether they will hide the facts, fearful that our government won't follow through, that the Chinese will retaliate against their interests or that they'll have to admit what's happened to their critical assets".

The White House said the "relationship between the two presidents is an extremely close one, and will hopefully lead to a peaceful resolution of the North Korea problem".

Trump said that Pyongyang should not be more advanced threats to Washington. Trump tweeted Friday that military solutions are "locked and loaded, should North Korea act unwisely".

Officials at the White House and Lighthizer's office were not immediately available for comment.

The new measure comes amid high tensions between Washington and Beijing. They added that the trade measure would be carried out under the rules of global law and would not trigger greater conflict with China.

"Americans are among the most innovative", said one official.

Albrighton relishes link up with new Leicester City star
We've got a big and fit squad with plenty of competition for places and I'm really looking forward to it myself. With three weeks of the transfer window remaining, a handful of Foxes stars have been linked with other clubs.

He simply will initiate the latest investigation of intellectual property theft in a long line of them running back through past administrations.

"If Americans continue to have their best technology and intellectual property stolen, or forcibly transferred offshore, the United States will find it hard to maintain its current technology leadership position and to remain one of the world's most innovative economies".

The official, who was speaking on the condition of anonymity, said that he doesn't believe this will lead to a period of conflict between the USA and China, adding, "this is simply business between two countries".

Next week the United States is scheduled to embark on its first round of renegotiations of the North American Free Trade Agreement.

At the end of March, Trump asked the Commerce Department to prepare a report on the causes of the trade deficit, country by country and product by product, in 90 days. Meanwhile, 100 days of trade talks with the Chinese carried out in past months resulted in a few trade gains but not the ambitious changes the administration had hoped for.

The administration has been eyeing other moves to rebalance the U.S.

In the conference call, officials did not rule out working with the WTO or other countries to penalize Chinese intellectual property violations, saying that the portions of US trade law they are relying on, Sections 301 and 302 of the 1974 trade law, allow them to take a broad range of actions.

"We lose hundreds of billions of dollars a year on trade with China".
