Coburn, Frerichs complete shock U.S. one-two in steeplechase

World Athletics Championships Emma Coburn takes steeplechase gold in thrilling final

United States' Emma Coburn, left, and Courtney Frerichs celebrate after finishing first and second, respectively, in Friday's women's 3,000-meter steeplechase final at the World Athletics Championships in London.

Frerichs finished in 9:03.77s to complete a brilliant one-two for the USA and smash her own personal best by 16 seconds.

The run was historic. But Coburn launched herself over the final water jump in a daring move that led to her surging down the final straight to win in a championship record time of 9 minutes 2.58 seconds.

The winning time also turns out to be the personal best for Coburn, whose previous career mark was 9:07.63 set last summer at Rio Olympics.

In her post race interview, Coburn was "speechless", but managed to get a few words out. This time, the USA runners came out on top, while Jepkemoi took bronze and Chepkoech finished fourth.

"My coach [Jerry Schumacher] had told me to just go for it", Frerichs said.

"I never expected to win in that time but I kept pressing. It is pretty wonderful to get a championship record", she added. Coburn went into the championships as the fifth fastest in the world this year.

"I was expecting a challenge from when I hit the front".

"I think we're all motivating each other", Coburn said.

The duo came into the race as the biggest threats to Schippers and so it proved as Ta Lou ran the Dutchwoman close but was forced to settle for an agonising silver yet again in 22.08.

American Kimberlyn Duncan finished just behind Stevens in sixth.

Miller-Uibo was 0.07 seconds adrift in third place, her bronze medal - her first over this distance at either the Olympic Games or World Championships - offering some consolation from a hard Championships. She crossed in 9:03.77, followed by Jepkemoi at 9:04.22.

"I've raced those girls for so many years and I've watched them progress". She just 24 years old, won an NCAA title in 2016 as a member of the New Mexico Lobos and the qualified for the Olympics, where she finished 11th in the final.
