NJ Transit train disabled at Penn Station

Amtrak workers repair tracks in New York's Penn Station. Amtrak is calling its first week of summer-long track work at New York's Penn Station a success. On Friday July 14 it was the fifth day of major

The Port Authority of NY and New Jersey said its PATH trains from Hoboken and Jersey City, New Jersey, cross-honored an average of about 23,000 NJ Transit fares on the first four days.

"We always have two on standby", the spokesman said of the rescue trains.

But then a New Jersey Transit train lost power at Penn Station about 4:45 p.m. and became stuck between the platform and the tunnel.

Amtrak officials said two rescue crews were dispatched to Penn Station around 1 p.m.

At 5:05 p.m., an Amtrak rescue engine towed the disabled NJ Transit train into the station, Tolbert said.

Amtrak travel between NY and New Jersey was briefly suspended, but had resumed on Amtrak rails by 1:15 p.m.

Amtrak officials said the first week of track work in Penn Station New York has gone "very well" and is even slightly ahead of schedule.

There is no word as to whether the power problems are associated with the Penn Station rehab.

The trouble began when a train from Miami carrying 165 people stalled as it entered Penn Station about 11:50 a.m.

The first train's passengers were provided snacks and water, and power was restored in about an hour, the Amtrak spokesman said. Some NJ Transit rail lines are being diverted to Hoboken during morning and afternoon peak periods.

Amtrak Chief Operating Officer Scot Naparstek says work to fix the aging infrastructure at Penn Station is ahead of schedule.

The fix work at Penn Station has forced several tracks to be closed at a time.
