Mohamed Salah had 'no idea' how Liverpool defend in debut - Jurgen Klopp

Salah poised for Reds debut

Salah nearly opened the scoring in the first minute of his Liverpool debut, but he blazed over the crossbar before Lallana fired narrowly wide.

The problem has now been resolved, and the Egypt worldwide is expected to feature against the Latics later.

He narrowly shot over from an angle, but his little show of lightening was appreciated with applause at DW Stadium.

Wigan took the lead in the 21st minute when attacker Alex Gilbey fired low into the bottom corner of the goal past Simon Mignolet in the Reds goal.

Jurgen Klopp insists he will no longer talk about Liverpool's transfer targets as he feels he can not influence potential signings or positively affect the outcome through the media.

"But you only have to look around and see what the clubs in this area are doing to realise it's a real hotbed of football".

Prior to the forward reporting for pre-season, Klopp told the club's official website: "He is a fantastic player, with speed".

Ibrahimovic might play for United again: Mourinho
For him the decision was to leave so there was not a new contract, there was a space of time for everybody to think, feel and decide.

Liverpool were in need of attacking reinforcements over the summer as Klopp prepares his team for a return to the Champions League next season following their fourth-placed finish last term.

"He brings all this in".

Of course, there are still facets for him to improve.

Klopp reflected afterwards: "You saw he had no idea how we defend usually, so he was really not involved in this".

Klopp said about debutant Salah: "He had two days with us, then he had to go to Paris, get the papers, but now he's here and we thought "let's play him".

"He's really used to a completely different way of defending, but the first situation, nice sprint".

Given the ballooning fees in the transfer window, recruiting Salah for an initial £36.9 million from Roma is impeccable business - and he will want to continue to prove as much.
