'Witch Hunt': Trump confirms he is being investigated over Comey firing

US Democrats Warn Trump Against Firing Special Counsel Mueller

And it was Rosenstein who appointed Robert Mueller as the special counsel to lead that investigation after Comey was sacked.

The White House has used a memo written by Mr Rosenstein to justify Mr Trump's decision to sack Mr Comey, but that Trump action may now be part of the probe. While the Trump administration initially said that letter was the reason the president fired Comey on May 9, Trump later said he did so because of the "Russia thing".

The order from the general counsel for the transition team casts a wide net on documents that could shed light on ties between Trump's presidential campaign and representatives of Russia's government. Comey also testified Trump had directed him to drop a related FBI investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Trump advisers and confidants describe the president as increasingly angry over the investigation, yelling at TV sets in the White House carrying coverage and insisting he is the target of a conspiracy to discredit - and potentially end - his presidency.

The Republican president has repeatedly complained about the probe, calling it a witch hunt and saying Democrats can not accept his election victory.

"He's in for a rude awakening" if he thinks he can shut down the investigation that way, said Feinstein.

This week, Trump also attacked what he called a "phony story" in the Washington Post that said Mueller's investigation had been expanded to include an inquiry into whether Trump's firing of Comey amounted to an illegal attempt to obstruct justice.

The deputy attorney general later appointed Special Counsel Robert Mueller to lead the inquiry, following growing demands from Democrats to appoint an independent special prosecutor to examine the Russian Federation allegations.

UK moves to ease tensions after van attack on London Muslims
On May 22, a suicide bomber killed 22 people at a concert by American pop singer Ariana Grande in Manchester in northern England. London mayor Sadiq Khan said that "while this appears to target a specific community, it was also an attack on shared values".

Mr Rosenstein took over the investigation into whether Russian Federation tried to tip the USA election in favour of Mr Trump, after Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself in March.

Former FBI Director James Comey is sworn in prior to testifying before a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 United States presidential election.

Rosenstein could eventually be questioned by Mueller about his memo on Comey and what motivated Trump to ask him to write it.

Rosenstein has defended Mueller and said he wouldn't fire him without good cause. Rosenstein, the official who would be responsible for dismissing Mueller, told USA lawmakers he would fire him only with good cause.

"Why is that Hillary Clintons family and Dems dealings with Russian Federation are not looked at, but my non-dealings are?" he asked at one point. The American people deserve to know just how deeply Moscow delved into our election process - and whether any Americans were connected to the interference with our democratic process.

Trump seemed to confirm that story - his White House hadn't denied it but instead condemned the leak from which it sprang - in a Friday morning tweet.

Trump, who hired his own lawyer last month to represent him regarding probes by the special counsel and congressional committees, kept up his criticism of the investigations in a series of tweets on Friday. "Sad!" he wrote in one post. Pence's office confirmed he had retained Richard Cullen, a former Virginia attorney general and USA attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, to assist "in responding to inquiries" from Mueller.

It also asks former transition officials to retain records related to five former Trump campaign associates: former campaign chairman Paul Manafort; his deputy Rick Gates; former foreign policy adviser Carter Page; retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn; and Roger Stone, a longtime Trump adviser.
