New York Times sues Federal Bureau of Investigation to get notes of Comey-Trump talks

He was answering accounts that he is personally being investigated for obstruction of justice with a characteristic scorched-earth defence: claiming mistreatment of historic proportions and calling into question the probity of his accusers.

The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that the Senate Judiciary Committee plans to open an investigation into Trump's firing of Comey.

The US president has denied trying to influence the investigation, but admitted Russian Federation was on his mind when he dismissed Comey.

"I can go around them", the tweet read.

The Washington Post signaled an escalation of the conflict when it posted an article later Wednesday reporting that special counsel Robert Mueller has launched an investigation into President Donald Trump personally over possible obstruction of justice in connection with the federal probe into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election and collusion by Trump campaign officials.

The most explosive was a June 14 report in The Post that Mueller's probe "now includes an examination of whether President Trump attempted to obstruct justice".

Finally, we know that Mueller's investigators are also looking for "any evidence of possible financial crimes among Trump associates", as the Post phrased it.

The widened Russian Federation probe could have far-reaching repercussions for Trump's presidency, transforming his closest aides into witnesses and sucking even more political oxygen out of the West Wing.

The transition order came the same day that Vice President Mike Pence's confirmed that he had hired a private lawyer to represent his interests in the expanding probe.

The latest White House crisis struck on the evening of Trump's 71st birthday, after a day in which he had won plaudits for his handling of the shooting of Republican Congressman Steve Scalise.

Not for the first time, Trump gives a false impression of what's really going on. Those leaks are one key reason some of President Trump's supporters are calling for Mueller to be fired, regardless of the political cost. Trump surely understands that would be a political disaster.

Comey boosted case for obstruction charges against Trump
Mr Trump lauded him for it but in a reality TV-type twist used it as initial justification for Mr Comey's sacking. In a letter, Sessions said that his decision to appear comes in light of last week's testimony by Comey .

Aides said that the President had chose to take matters into his own hands and believed he was his own best defender in the escalating crisis surrounding the White House.

The president wrote, "I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director!"

Allies have even floated the idea that Mueller may be fired.

The White House referred questions to Trump's personal attorney, Marc Kasowitz. "The FBI leak of information regarding the President is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal", he said.

It was unclear whether the president's comment confirming he was under investigation was based on direct knowledge or media reports that Mueller is examining whether the president obstructed justice by firing Comey.

Americans should exercise caution before accepting as true any stories attributed to anonymous 'officials, ' particularly when they do not identify the country - let alone the branch of agency of government - with which the alleged sources supposedly are affiliated.

Trump also trained his fire on his onetime rival Hillary Clinton. "Why is that Hillary Clintons family and Dems dealings with Russian Federation are not looked at, but my non-dealings are?", Trump tweeted just before 4 p.m. EDT.

"Crooked H destroyed phones w/ hammer, "bleached" emails, & had husband meet w/AG days before she was cleared- & they talk about obstruction?"

Several White House officials and Trump associates insisted on anonymity in order to discuss the president's views of the unfolding investigation.

Among them, the Director of National Intelligence, Dan Coats, head of the National Security Agency (N.S.A.), Adm. Michael S. Rogers, and former N.S.A. deputy director, Richard Ledgett.

Comey testified last week that he also felt pressured to drop the Flynn probe.
