London police say 58 people assumed dead in tower block blaze

Although police did not speculate on the eventual number of fatalities, local community sources say at least 70 from Grenfell Tower are still missing, including entire families.

At least 58 people are dead or presumed dead after the blaze.

May, criticised for keeping her distance from angry residents during her visit to the charred remains of the apartment building, said on Saturday that the response to the disaster had been "not good enough".

Cundy said investigators are looking at how the building was constructed, a recent refurbishment, maintenance and fire safety measures.

He said that authorities were continuing to investigate whether any crimes had been committed in the inferno.

Police have been struggling to come up with a list of who was in the building when the fire started, making it hard to determine how many died.

If that death toll is confirmed, it would make the Grenfell Tower blaze the deadliest in London since the Second World War. "However, there may be other people who were in there on the night that others were not aware were there", he said.

Emergency services are continuing to search for bodies in the now burnt-out building.

London Fire Commissioner Dany Cotton told BBC Radio 4's Today programme she could understand the "absolute frustration and misery" of people concerned about loved ones who had not yet been identified, but that it was critical to go through the process properly.

The latest figures from NHS England show that 17 patients are now being treated in four London hospitals.

"The prime minister is this morning chairing a cross-government meeting to ensure everything possible is being done to support those affected by the Grenfell tragedy", the spokesman said.

London police on Sunday released images taken within the tower, saying conditions inside verged on the "indescribable".

Her political future - already in doubt after her Conservative Party lost its governing majority in early elections - has been further questioned because of her response to the fire, and observers have even referred to it as her Hurricane Katrina moment. The recovery effort resumed this afternoon, but the police warn it could take weeks for answers to emerge.
