Deputy AG Rosenstein: Special counsel will have 'full independence' for Russian Federation probe

Rep. Adam Schiff, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, tweeted Monday that it will be "useless" for President Donald Trump to fire the special counsel looking into possible ties between his administration and Russian Federation.

Rosenstein told a Senate Appropriations subcommittee Tuesday that he saw no cause for Mueller's dismissal.

"We're not going to let the President choose who conducts this investigation", he said.

Yet that tweet contradicts what Gingrich tweeted just less than a month ago, saying, "Robert Mueller is superb choice to be special counsel". That's what I would do. He added that "if there were good cause, I would consider it".

He called because "I have been very clear" about Mueller and the lawyers he's hired amounting to a "rigged game", Gingrich said in an interview Tuesday on CBS.

Collins' question was prompted by recent media reports that Mueller's role leading the DOJ Russia investigation could be in jeopardy.

Ruddy, who has consistently said he speaks for himself, told "PBS NewsHour" host Judy Woodruff that he had spoken with Trump last week.

Ruddy's comments came on the heels of the president's own attorney, Jay Sekulow, who made similar comments, claiming the president was still weighing the option of terminating Mueller. "I personally think it would be a significant mistake, even though I don't think there is a justification [for a special counsel]". "With respect to this subject, only the president or his attorneys are authorized to comment", White House press secretary Sean Spicer also told NPR.

Representative Scalise's condition upgraded to 'serious' after shooting
Scalise, the No. 3 House Republican , arrived at the hospital via helicopter in shock, with intense internal bleeding, Sava said. The doctors said that while Scalise remains in critical condition, they "are encouraged by improvement in his condition".

As Mueller builds his legal team, Trump's allies have begun raising questions about the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director's impartiality, suggesting he can not be trusted to lead the probe.

New Hampshire Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, a Democrat, opened her line of questioning, in the hearing that was supposed to focus on the Justice Department budget, by asking if Rosenstein had seen any evidence of good cause to fire Mueller. Rosenstein responded: "No I have not".

He says he is confident that Mueller will have "the full independence he needs" to investigate thoroughly.

"Time to rethink", he tweeted Monday, citing Mueller's hiring decisions and Comey's admission that he'd instructed a friend to share with reporters notes he'd taken of his private conversations with Trump in order to force the appointment of a special counsel.

Under current Justice Department regulations, firing Mueller would have to be done by deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein, not the president- though those regulations could theoretically be set aside. Such a move would create a firestorm coming weeks after Trump fired FBI Director James Comey.

Rosenstein said that because Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from the Russian Federation matter, Mueller could only be fired by Rosenstein himself.

Sessions is testifying before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday afternoon.
