British PM to meet fire survivors in Downing St

"Tensions are running high because we have had no answers yet", Rochelle Thomas, a protester who lives one street away from the Grenfell Tower, told The Guardian. Grief over a London high-rise tower fire that killed dozens turned to outrage Friday amid reports that the materials used in a recen.

"This number 58 may change. So that 58 would include that 30", he said. "There were people we spoke to who were housed for one night, didn't know where they'd spend the next night, had no money to spend on food, and were not told anything by anyone, no one was in charge".

"Unfortunately, I have a lot of experience in tackling hundreds of fires in high-rise flats in London, but when we were fighting them they had no external cladding - they had cast concrete or pebble-dash fascias, which don't burn or pose an external threat".

It came a day after she faced criticism for meeting firefighters but not residents at the scene of the blaze.

Metropolitan Police Commander Stuart Cundy said that number "may increase" further and that the "significant" recovery operation is likely to take weeks.

He says tower residents who survived fear a cover-up will keep the truth from coming out.

Prime Minister Theresa May's government earlier sought to quell anger over the fire, pledging to support the victims of the blaze after protesters jeered her when she visited local residents.

The meeting lasted more than two hours Saturday but the group did not speak to reporters gathered outside.

After meeting with Grenfell survivors on Friday, May announced a 5 million pound ($6.4 million) fund to help them and expressed sorrow for their plight.

Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Theresa May admitted that support for families in the "initial hours" was "not good enough".

Death toll from London inferno rises to 58
They said they were kept in the dark and repeatedly given incorrect assurances that accommodation had been found for residents. The blaze tore through all floors of the building and took more than 200 firefighters 24 hours to bring it under control.

The identification of the victims is proving very hard - which experts attribute to the extreme heat of the fire. "Everyone affected by this tragedy needs reassurance that the government is there for them at this bad time - and that is what I am determined to provide", she said.

He said he was not interested in knowing why they had left it so long to make themselves known, but stressed that it was vital for police to know they are safe and well. This relies on dental records, fingerprints and DNA when possible and also features like tattoos or scars.

In her official birthday message a day later, the queen addressed the latest tragedy to hit the nation.

The 91-year-old monarch said that Britain remains "resolute in the face of adversity" after the horrendous fire and recent extremist attacks in London and Manchester. Earlier in the day, the 91-year-old monarch described the country's mood as "somber" but insisted that Britain remained resolute during a hard time.

In a television interview Friday, she sidestepped questions over whether she had misread the public mood.

Corbyn welcomed the government's decision to establish a public inquiry but insisted that it must be "speedy" and allow residents to fully take part, with legal aid provided if needed.

Most major cities with many high-rise buildings have detailed building codes and fire safety rules requiring several layers of protections in tall buildings. British officials have ordered a review of other buildings that have had similar renovations.

The fire at the 24-story building has led to community anger and protests over the British government's response. Churches and community centers are providing meals and support, and donations of clothing, toys and household supplies are flooding in.

"My commitment to families is that as soon as we can, we will locate and recover their loved ones." the commander said.

He added: "We would like the chief executive of the council to make public commitments on what the council is going to do for the victims of this borough, and for all the other buildings in the borough that could stand the same fate at Grenfell Towers".
