Zach Johnson making an early move at Erin Hills

Having seen three rounds on this first-time U.S. Open venue, he basically couldn't wait to put Erin Hills in his rear-view mirror. All at seven under par at Erin Hills.

Johnson, ranked No. 1 in the world, missed the cut after a 1-over 73, which came a day after he shot 75.

Speaking of big-hitting Swedish stars, Alex Noren will join his countryman with some extra time off this week.

Rahm's expectations were understandably sky-high with his meteoric rise this year, but a little dose of reality can't hurt in the long run. At Erin Hills, it feels like there's all the room in the world to play but the penalty for missing the short grass is severe. "I thought walking on to the par-3 13th with the front left pin, I thought they could at least give us one tee box up but that's probably too nice to expect out of the USGA, that's a PGA Tour thing to do". It's hard to make a lot of birdies for me around here.

"Showed up for the last six holes, anyway", said the four-times major victor, who made four birdies on his second nine, including his finishing hole, the par-three ninth. None of the top 18 has won a major, making it very likely this will be the seventh straight major to crown a first-time victor.

Thomas, 24, who shot 59 earlier this year in Hawaii, was 9-under on the par-72 course, eclipsing the U.S. Open record for lowest round in relation to par, set by Johnny Miller at Oakmont (par-71) in 1973.

A three-time victor on the PGA Tour this season, Thomas also joined the exclusive "59" club by breaking 60 at the Sony Open, but he may have saved his best for Father's Day weekend and his quest for his first major crown.

Then again, none of the top 16 on the leaderboard has ever won a major. "Even though it's very disappointing to not be here on the weekend, I think these last two rounds will serve me well going into the summer". This week marked his seventh U.S. Open; he'd never missed a cut, and counts five top-10 finishes.

Taking the national championship to Erin Hills was a gamble by the USGA.

A commercial blimp crashed to the ground and caught fire just outside the course Thursday, about the time the county health department was analyzing samples that confirmed evidence of the E. coli bacteria in water at a hydration station near the 12th hole. There have been no reports yet of anyone getting sick.

Arnold Palmer's 1960 US Open win honored at Erin
The 54-hole leader, Brian Harman , entered Sunday's final round attempting to become the first left-handed player to win the U.S. Koepka carried a one-stroke lead into the back nine after a birdie at No. 8, but quickly fell back into a tie with Harman.

And then there was Tommy Fleetwood, a name not many in the US will be overly familiar with. Spieth had to scramble all day to slip under the cut line by one shot.

Corey Conners, of Listowel, Ont., shot his second straight 76 to finish at eight-over par and miss the cut.

"Yeah, 12 under, I'd have about a 10-shot lead in most Opens", he said. "I couldn't possibly shoot any higher than I did".

The Northern Irishman closed out his round in style with four birdies over his final six holes for a 71 but it was a case of too little unable to undo the damage of a first round 78.

Fowler has the best chance, even though he lost so much ground over the final two hours.

Germany's Martin Kaymer, victor in 2014, took 41 shots to complete the front nine and although he picked up two birdies on the back nine, his three-over 75 saw him drop back to level par.

"As long as it's a good tournament, it's good for the U.S. Open, " Thomas said.

"I hadn't been out of position all day and suddenly I was staring double bogey in the face".

Make it a six-way tie atop the U.S. Open leaderboard.
