'Trooping the colour' in London for queen's official birthday

Saturday marks Queen Elizabeth II's official birthday - her actual 91st birthday was April 21 - but the reigning monarch said it's hard to be in a celebratory mood in light of recent terror attacks in London and Manchester. Public anger was mounting as residents and neighbours demanded answers for how the blaze spread so quickly amid reports that contractors installed a cheaper, less flame-resistant type of exterior panelling in a renovation of Grenfell Tower that ended in May 2016. More than 600 guardsmen and cavalry make up the parade, a celebration of the Sovereign's official birthday, although the Queen's actual birthday is on April 21.

"This military ceremony dates back to the early eighteenth century or earlier, when the colours (flags) of the battalion were carried ('trooped') down the ranks", the family's official Instagram account said in a message captioning a photo of the monarch with Prince Philip, her husband of 70 years. "The country has witnessed a succession of bad tragedies". "As a nation, we continue to reflect and pray for all those who have been directly affected by these events", read the statement.

Previously, the monarch had released an unprecedented statement in which she said that the United Kingdom remained "resolute in the face of adversity", in reference to the terror attacks in Manchester and London, as well as the deadly fire.

A solemn Queen Elizabeth II marked a minute of silence on Saturday for victims of the London highrise inferno that killed at least 30 people as exhausted firefighters continued their grim search for more bodies.
