Team New Zealand capsizes in America's Cup challenger race

Competing against Britain's Land Rover BAR in Bermuda, the Kiwis were heading to the start line when strong winds forced the boat to plunge into the water.

Martin Whitmarsh, chief executive of Land Rover BAR, wants to bring more structure to the event and his idea of staging it every two years has been backed by five of the six teams involved, with only New Zealand yet to agree.

The Japanese team, skippered by Dean Barker, led the Swedish side 3-1 at one point but lost steam in the best-of-nine challenger series on Bermuda's Great Sound.

New Zealand will now progress to the challenger play-off, where they will face either Artemis Racing or SoftBank Team Japan.

The victor of the best of nine series will go on to challenge Oracle Team USA for the America's Cup.

The delay could benefit New Zealand, who spent all night repairing their catamaran after a spectacular capsizing during a race against Britain on Tuesday.

"I've dried out a little bit, but apart from that I'm fine", Outteridge said after the race.

Ainslie has rallied before, both in winning Olympic gold medals and in helping Oracle Team USA win eight straight races to come back from an 8-1 deficit against Team New Zealand in the 2013 America's Cup on San Francisco Bay.

US Open: How the Irish have fared on Day 2
But the former Irish Open victor posted one under for the back nine to get into the clubhouse just inside the cut mark. The past seven majors, dating back to Jason Day's victory at the 2015 PGA Championship, have been won by first-timers.

Team Japan drew another penalty when the two boats nearly touched at gate five in the final race of the day, handing Artemis a comfortable win.

Outteridge was left stranded in the water, from where he was later picked up by a support boat.

The British crew had suffered equipment failure on Monday when part of their wing controls broke, meaning they had to forfeit two races to their New Zealand opponents. "We figured out why they slowed down when we sailed past them on the run".

"I couldn't be prouder of the team today".

"It's the first time it's happened to myself or to probably many people in these boats and I don't think it will be the last, either", Outteridge said.

They sailed with composure, overtaking BAR mid-race and hanging on to take their series lead to 3-0.

The next day, the rematch fizzled when Artemis was penalized for a port-starboard infraction, allowing the Kiwis to sail to an easy win. After the Kiwis reached match point, Oracle won eight straight races to retain the oldest trophy in global sports.

Ainslie hopes Team New Zealand will be able to renew their rivalry out on the water.
