Spieth (69) finally figures out Erin Hills

Justin Thomas shoots 63, trails Brian Harman by 1 at US Open

The only men in the world's top 10 to significantly challenge a leaderboard dominated by players chasing their first victory at a major were Matsuyama and American Rickie Fowler and both of them are also yet to win one of golf's big four prizes.

After birdieing his first two holes to claim the lead, the immensely powerful 27-year-old was joined at the summit by overnight leader Brian Harman, who looked set to push his fellow American all the way as the final groups moved past the turn. "He went and won the golf tournament on the back nine", Harman said about Koepka, who clinched his victory with a run of three birdies in a row from the 14th.

Memo to anyone who aspires to win next year's U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills: Better hope that Scheffler earns a spot in the field and, if he does, play a practice round with him.

After last year's tie for eighth at the U.S. Open in Oakmont, Pa., and a third place in the PGA Championship, Summerhays said he built some confidence heading into this year's majors.

The latest U.S. Open victor spoke only two years ago about how he preferred baseball.

But that won't bother Tommy Fleetwood who was brought up playing the windswept north west links of England's Golf Coast. "It's fun to watch, but it's not a typical U.S. Open".

Spieth had a nice day considering how the winds have picked up at Erin Hills. In the end, Brooks Koepka separated himself from the pack in a big way.

Thomas' 9-under 63 also broke Johnny Miller's U.S. Open record for low round in relation to par.

"It's the US Open anything can happen".

"I didn't play how I wanted to", he said on Sky Sports.

Arnold Palmer's 1960 US Open win honored at Erin
The 54-hole leader, Brian Harman , entered Sunday's final round attempting to become the first left-handed player to win the U.S. Koepka carried a one-stroke lead into the back nine after a birdie at No. 8, but quickly fell back into a tie with Harman.

That's still 15 more than the Erin Hills leads.

He bogeyed the 12th and 13th holes.

"A few years later, he is winning the U.S. Open".

Brooks Koepka poses with the trophy with the leaderboard in the background at Erin Hills. Within five holes of his final round, the 26-year-old was three-over par. Harman missed the cut in his previous two U.S. Opens. First he hit a 330-yard 3-wood, then a 300-yard 3-wood that landed on the edge of the green just past a yawning chasm of a bunker, bounced softly, then rolled a mere 8 feet to finish just beside the cup. Spieth has said that he feels that he is striking the ball well, but that he is trying to get more consistent on and around the greens.

But two holes later, the first blemish on Koepka's card - a bogey on the 10th - dropped him into a tie with Harman once again.

His third shot came to rest woefully short, and his fourth went over the green.

Matsuyama will rue one shot in his final round.

World number four Matsuyama started six shots behind Harman and he started quickly with three birdies in five holes.

Right now, there may not be any sport in America where you can be as good as Koepka - nearly everyone in golf thinks that the ex-Florida State star, ranked No. 22 in the world, is a major figure of the game's future - and yet have so many genial, obsessed, talented players of your generation, your own buddies, who are constantly trying to grind you to dust by their sheer numbers. Only four left-handers-Bubba Watson, Phil Mickelson, Mike Weir and Bob Charles-have won major championships.
