India to avoid foreign rockets to launch communication satellites: ISRO chief

ISRO's Mega Rocket Launch All You Need To Know About GSLV Mark III

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah congratulated the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for launching the heaviest rocket - Geostationary Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV Mark-III) and deploying its heaviest communicaiton satellite GSAT-19 on Monday. The mission's success will enable India to launch four-tonne satellites on its own rocket instead of paying huge amounts of money to foreign space agencies to execute the operation.

The next generation heavy launch vehicle GSLV Mk-III rocket, nicknamed the "Fat Boy", will place the 3,136kg communication satellite GSAT-19 into the orbit on its maiden flight. The GSLV-Mk III, carrying India's heaviest communication satellite up to now - the GSAT-9, weighing 3.2 tonnes - is scheduled to take off on 5th June, Monday. The rocket is powered by an indigenous engine that uses liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen as fuel, he said. But it was delayed as the space agency had to focus on their immediate requirements including development of Vikas engine, which now powers both PSLV and GSLV.

# Prakash Javadekar: Congratulations to ISRO and team on successful launch of India's most powerful rocket GSLVMkIII D1/GSAT-19 mission. It's successful launch will herald a new era of space-faring and space-transport. In February, it launched a record-breaking 104 nano satellites into orbit, all onboard a single rocket. The need for a heavier launch vehicle was felt during the 1990s to meet the country's requirement for heavier communication satellites with large numbers of transponders. What interesting is that ISRO has suggested the first person fly into space from India could be a woman. It weighs 640 tons and the height exceeds 43 meters.

It started with India's launch of a Mars probe in 2014, for less than it cost to make the Oscar-winning Hollywood space-thriller Gravity.

Trump rolls back some, not all, changes in US-Cuba relations
As a driver who gives Americans rides in a restored 1954 Chevy convertible in Havana, Obama's policy helped his business prosper. Trump cast that as a sign the US still wanted to engage with Cuba in hopes of forging "a much stronger and better path".

ISRO Chairman Krishna Kumar described the launch as an "historic day". It will monitor the nature of charged particles and the influence of space radiation on satellites and their electronic components, according to the ISRO.

"Communication satellites are quite heavy and we were (only) able to send up to two tonnes previously".

Total life span of GSAT-19 is 10 years. Industry sources said globally the trend is the weight of communication satellites is going up while the weight of earth observation satellites has come down.
