Congress members and aides watched Mr Scalise drag himself through the dirt field after he was shot, leaving a trail of blood behind him. Scalise, the third most powerful Republican in the House, was shot through the hip.

Politico reported Thursday that a lobbyist for Tyson Foods who was also shot Wednesday, Matt Mika, remains in critical condition and will require additional surgeries, his family said Thursday.

Mr Trump visited the Louisiana congressman at the hospital on Wednesday night, and Vice President Mike Pence paid a visit on Thursday morning. "His risk of death right now is substantially lower than when he came in". The bullet caused massive bleeding, and damaged bones and internal organs.

Scalise, 51, is among four people shot by a gunman at a House Republican baseball practice Wednesday in the Washington suburbs.

Sava said he was optimistic about the progress made by Scalise over the past 48 hours.

Congressman's shooting first test for Trump-era gun debate
Hodgkinson had a history of lashing out at Republicans and apparently had volunteered for Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign. Gun control advocates, already on the defensive, insist they're not abandoning their efforts in Congress or state legislatures.

Here's the video of the bipartisan moment of silence and prayer for Rep. Steve Scalise and the other victims.

"If Scalise was not there, he's the one with security detail, we wouldn't have had any protection and God knows how bad that might have been", Rep. Brad Wenstrup, R-Ohio, told "Fox & Friends". At a press conference, President Trump says that wounded Scalise's condition is more hard than people first realized.

Despite the hospital's comment about Scalise's progress, "critical condition" is still defined by the American Hospital Association as a state in which vital signs are unstable and in which "indicators are unfavorable".

The president says that because of the "tremendous pain and suffering he's now enduring. our country will perhaps become closer, more unified".

"He's in some trouble", Trump said during a jobs event at the White House, calling Scalise a "great fighter" and "he's going to be OK, I hope".

The Congressional Baseball Game began shortly after it's scheduled start of 7:05 p.m. (2305 UTC) Thursday. The 66-year-old posted several angry messages about President Donald Trump and the Republican party on social media before the incident.

Scalise has undergone multiple surgeries and will need more.
