Helmut Kohl, the chancellor who reunited Germany, dies

Without Helmut Kohl in the poition of Germany's Federal Chancellor, there would be no euro today and the EU would never get its contemporary contours, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said.

Also underlining his contributions, German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel called Kohl "a great statesman, a great German politician, and above all a great European, who did much not only to bring German unity but also for Europe to become one".

British Prime Minister Theresa May paid tribute to "a giant of European history" and "the father of modern Germany".

"Working closely with my very good friend to help achieve a peaceful end to the Cold War and the unification of Germany within North Atlantic Treaty Organisation will remain one of the great joys of my life", Bush said. This required great political strength and courage - both of which qualities Helmut had in abundance.

The following year, Kohl plunged his party into crisis when he admitted accepting undeclared donations during his time as chancellor.

"Italy remembers him as a protagonist of German reunification and of the fall of Europe's Wall".

"A life has ended and the person who lived it will go down in history" said German Chancellor Angela Merkel, speaking from Rome.

Former U.S. ambassador to Germany, John Kornblum said that most of the time Kohl looked like he was half asleep.

Mr Kohl died yesterday morning in Ludwigshafen, the home city he had rarely left since a stroke in 2008.

Flowers lie in front of the Kohl's home in Oggersheim, Germany on Friday.

French President Emmanuel Macron said he was a truly great German and above all a truly great European has died. This is because he was able to achieve the long-dreamed unification after the fall of Berlin Wall in 1989.

"We are mourning. #RIP #HelmutKohl", said his conservative party, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), on Twitter, with a photo of the former leader, who served as chancellor for 16 years.

(Vatican Radio) The President of the German Bishops' Conference, Cardinal Reinhard Marx, has sent a message of condolence following the death of the former German Chancellor, Helmut Kohl, who died on Friday.

On July 16, 1990, it fell to Gorbachev as Soviet president and to Kohl, as chancellor of West Germany, to reach an agreement on the reunification of communist East Germany with the capitalist west.

Often harsh and thin-skinned, Kohl also could display a quick wit and jovial earthiness.
