Google Faces Record-Breaking €1 Billion EU Fine

Google CEO Sundar

The EU's antitrust watching is preparing to fine the firm £870 million ($1.12 billion) following a seven-year investigation into the issue, according to a report.

In the next few weeks, the European Union is expected to come out with a decision on an investigation probing Google's business practices, and the tech giant is facing a fine that may exceed €1 billion euro, according to Financial Times' sources familiar with the matter. However, any precise order in that regard would likely only be hammered out after a decision is announced, said the WSJ.

A financial sanction for abuse of a monopoly position is capped at a maximum of 10% of the total revenues of the company involved, which in the case of Google's parent company, Alpahbet, was $90bn a year ago.

Google is a top priority case for her as European politicians and publishers push for action against the Mountain View, California-based company that's come to dominate online advertising. The actual fine will be calculated as up to 30% of Google's shopping revenues multiplied by the number of years that the offending behavior has been carried out.

Google has repeatedly rejected the charges but has faced a number of complaints from its United States and European rivals, which triggered a seven-year investigation by the European Commission.

Syria campaigners name refugee as London fire victim
Mohammed Alhaj Ali was a first year engineering student at the University of West London, the institution told NBC News . Firefighters say they do not expect to find more survivors.

The European Commission's decision will come after a seven-year investigation into the world's most popular internet search engine triggered by scores of complaints from both U.S. and European rivals.

Brussels has rejected suggestions it is mounting a campaign against USA tech companies.

No timeline has yet been provided, but the fine would undoubtedly have serious implications for the operations of Google and other tech companies.

For example, in 2016 the company was accused of using the dominant mobile operating system Android to exclude competitors.
