Drones carrying defibrillators could aid heart emergencies

Here's how drones could save the lives of heart attack victims

Swedish researchers have been experimenting with drones treating an individual whose heart stops, New Scientist reported.

New research shows that a specially constructed drone equipped with a defibrillator can be dispatched by alarm and delivered automatically to the site of a cardiac arrest long before an ambulance arrives.New research from the Centre for Resuscitation Science at Karolinska Institutet and Stockholm South General (Söder) Hospital in Sweden shows that a specially constructed drone equipped with a defibrillator can be dispatched by alarm and delivered automatically to the site of a cardiac arrest long before an ambulance arrives.

For those in cardiac arrest, every minute that goes by without CPR or a defibrillator reduces the chance of survival by 10 percent.

A new study suggests that defibrillator-carrying drones could help save lives. Shocking someone within three minutes gives them the best shot.

The most common cause of cardiac arrest is an abnormal heart rhythm called ventricular fibrillation, in which the heart's electrical activity becomes disorganised.

The drones were 16 minutes faster than emergency medical services, the study found.

Their study was published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Arrest over London terror attack
Another Australian who died, nurse Kirsty Boden, was said to have been trying to help other victims when she was killed. Two unarmed police officers have been hailed as heroes for their bravery in taking on the London Bridge terrorists.

"This is a really neat, innovative method to combat a problem that we have been struggling with for decades", says Kurz.

"We know that out-of-hospital cardiac arrest has a high mortality, that improves with both bystander CPR and early defibrillation with AED", Vinocur said.

The devices are often found in public facilities, such as sports venues, malls and airports. "This is, like, public-access defibrillation on steroids, where we just bring the defibrillator to you". They chose this location based on a few characteristics-such as restricted airspace, extensive delays in EMS response times and a heavy summer population. The median time from dispatch to the arrival of the drone stood at 5 minutes and 21 seconds, while the median time from the emergency services was 22 minutes and 0 seconds.

But, "in this study, they did find that in all instances the drone arrived before EMS", a delivery speed innovation that Vinocur thinks could someday prove to be "clinically significant".

Hands-only CPR is more effective for the majority of cardiac arrests that happen outside of a hospital, Glatter said, noting that with each minute that slips by without performing CPR, survival rate decreases by 10 percent.

Scientists tested whether drones with defibrillators can get to the scene more quickly than an ambulance. "Hopefully we will be up and running within a year or two", he says. Drones delivered thousands of condoms on villages in rural Africa, islands have quickly received medical supplies, and scientists have been able to send biological specimens to distant pathology labs.

YouTube videos, Amazon delivery, military operations, farming - you name it, drones are being used for everything from aerial photography and delivering packages to conducting surveillance and tending crops.
