Trump sees 'fast' decision over new Federal Bureau of Investigation director

President Donald Trump had asked FBI Director James Comey for his loyalty during a dinner in January a report claimed

A look at key moments in Comey's tenure, the lead-up to Trump's decision to fire him and developments since then.

Gillibrand accused Trump of having "tried to undermine the basic institutions of our democracy" and she appealed to Republicans to "join in calling for an independent prosecutor in Trump campaign's connections with Russian Federation". "He's simply stating a fact". "It's all about the goal with which it's done".

The White House denied that Trump asked for Comey's loyalty.

Given that both houses of Congress are in Republican control, it would take an enormous public outcry for lawmakers to begin the process of attempting to remove the president from office.

Fisher headed the Justice Department's criminal division, also under Bush.

On Wednesday, Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters Trump asked Rosenstein and Attorney General Jeff Sessions for their recommendation "based on the conversation they had on Monday".

Clapper said it would have been inappropriate and out of character for Comey to have asked for job security, or to have told the president anything about a pending criminal investigation.

Trump told reporters traveling with him on Air Force One that he may be able to make his decision on the Federal Bureau of Investigation head before he leaves on his first foreign trip later next week.

But the motive of the firing is under question with speculation over whether Trump may have tried to interfere in an investigation into possibly his or his associate's ties with Russian Federation.

"I think the point that I made with respect to the tweet is the president has no further comment on this", said Spicer.

A screen that popped up on infected computers demanded $300 to $600 in bitcoin as payments to unlock important files. A "simultaneous cyber attack" worldwide by the "vicious virus" had caused deep concern in global society, it said.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer flatly denied a loyalty pledge was ever brought up at the private White House dinner. "Nearly all of them are very well known", Trump said aboard the plane that took him to Lynchburg, Virginia, where he gave the commencement address at Liberty University. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., added that "there is so much that smacks of obstruction of justice that is swirling around this dismissal and the meetings that preceded it. The exchange that took place with Comey, whichever version you believe, raises very, very serious questions about attempts to pressure an FBI director investigating wrongdoing potentially implicating the president".

Comey has not publicly discussed any conversations he has had with Trump.

In response to the media coming out and questioning the differences in the responses, President Trump threatened to take away press briefings and defended his administration.

"James Comey better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!" the president tweeted yesterday.

"If shown that Trump removed Comey to avoid being investigated?"

November 6, 2016: Trump criticizes Comey's second letter to Congress, saying Clinton was being protected by a "rigged system" and pronouncing her "guilty", despite the FBI's conclusion that criminal charges were unwarranted.

"The president has nothing further to add on that", Spicer said when questioned about a recording system.

The former prosecutors who signed the letter include Benito Romano, the district's interim U.S. Attorney during President George H.W. Bush's administration; Robert Cleary, who served as U.S. Attorney in New Jersey after working in the NY office; and Richard Ben-Veniste, who was a special prosecutor during the Watergate scandal and later served as a member of the bipartisan commission that investigated the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
