Detective Acting Superintendent Mick Haddow, the State Crime Command's Sex Crimes Squad Commander, appealed for that woman, who was driving a small red vehicle, believed to be a hatchback, to come forward to help with the investigation.

He then drove her to a house in suburban Sydney where she was held captive.

The young Guinean girl arrived at the Asylum Seeker Centre in Newtown on April 27 and told staff she had just escaped from a house where she had been repeatedly sexually assaulted by multiple men.

"This has been a very, very hard investigation, there are cultural issues, language issues to deal with", he said.

Police are trying to track down a good Samaritan who helped a 17-year-old girl from West Africa after she escaped a Sydney home where she was reportedly held captive as a sex slave. The pair travelled to Australia via Paris over several days in April.

The girl, named in USA court documents was "Jane Doe", was reported missing on April 11 and a search of flight records revealed she had left the country, Australian Federal Police told AAP.

RW Patric Hornqvist (upper body) is questionable for Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals at Ottawa Senators on Wednesday. Phaneuf wasn't called for a penalty on the play because he did not leave his feet to deliver the devastating hit to Rust.

The girl has since returned to her Australia, police said.

"It's really vague descriptions about units, we don't know what suburbs we are talking about at this stage", Mr Sheehan said.

After being taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for treatment, the teenager was placed into the care of Family and Community Services.

By the end of the month, she had escaped and ran, fearing for her life-until a woman picked her up and drove her to the Asylum Seeker Center.

The AFP's human trafficking unit has been brought in to investigate along with NSW Police State Crime Command's sex crimes squad.

If you have any information to pass on to police about this incident, contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. But authorities told the Sydney Morning Herald the process has been hard so far.
