U.N. sees 'incremental progress' after Syria talks

UN Deputy Special Envoy for Syria Ramzy Ezzeldin Ramzy left and UN Special Envoy of the Secretary General for Syria Staffan de Mistura right attend a round of negotiation with Syria's main opposition High Negotiations Committee leader Nasr

The US Department of State said on Monday it has evidence that up to 50 prisoners have been killed in Syria's Sednaya Prison complex daily and their bodies were burnt in a specially-built crematorium to "cover up" the executions. I mean expert meetings. The HNC delegation also stressed "usefulness of maintaining regular contacts with Russian representatives within the framework of the Geneva negotiation process".

"The paper that has been presented is put aside for now", Naser al-Hariri, chief negotiator of the Turkish and Saudi-backed High Negotiations Council (HNC) told reporters on May 18, making reference to the UN's proposed plans to write a new Syrian constitution.

Syria state news agency says President Bashar Assad has met with Iraq's national security adviser to discuss steps to improve coordination between their countries' militaries in the anti-terrorism campaign along their shared border.

"The important thing is that our political ambition is higher because we want to focus on fighting terrorism represented by armed groups and the state and government terrorism happening against our country".

"In every meeting we remind the attendees that there is terrorism by terrorists and also terrorism by states committed against our country", al-Ja'afari said.

On setting a time limit for expert meetings and whether it would continue beyond the Geneva meetings, al-Jaafari noted that he did not say that, but, he added "I said that in this round there was only one meeting at the expert level, which was yesterday's meeting".

The U.N. talks no longer aim to bring an end to the fighting - that objective has been taken up by parallel talks sponsored by Russia, Turkey and Iran - but they do aim to prepare the way for political reform in Syria, if the six-year-old war ends. The area has been considered a de-conflicted zone under an agreement between the USA and Russian Federation earlier this month.

Modi-conomics ; how people responded to government after three years in power
On overall rating, people's support for the government has declined from 64 per cent last year to 61 per cent this year. Incidentally, 38 per cent people previous year gave credit to the government for keeping the prices down.

A United Nations statement referred to "an initial part of a process of expert meetings on legal and constitutional issues of relevance to the intra-Syrian talks".

"We are deeply anxious about the erosion of the emerging understanding of the need to combine efforts of all those who confront terrorists" such as the Daesh and al-Qaida's branch in Syria, Lavrov said.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said the U.S. action would hamper efforts to find a political solution to the conflict.

The head of the Syrian government delegation said Friday that central issues in ongoing Syria peace talks had not been discussed, adding his delegation's participation in this latest round of negotiations had ended.

Asked if the three days of talks had made headway, he said: "Not too much".

That was rejected by the Syrian government and raised a string of questions from the opposition, so de Mistura said he was "moving beyond" those discussions to start a new set of expert meetings with each side.

He added that the goal of these meetings is to discuss the paper of basic principles, which includes in its articles appropriate points that serve as constitutional principles, referring to the basic principles paper which consists of 12 points where the elements related to the constitutional process will be dealt with.
