Fox News founder Roger Ailes dead at age 77More

On Thursday morning, Roger Ailes, the founder of Fox News, died.

According to a Palm Beach police report, a caller contacted 911 dispatchers just before 2 p.m. on May 10, saying Ailes had fallen in his bathroom, hit his head and had serious bleeding.

"Fox News founder Roger Ailes, who recently resigned from the company, died Thursday at age 77". Paramedics arrived within a minute and he was taken to a hospital. Ailes would also work on the successful presidential campaigns of Ronald Reagan in 1984 and George H.W. Bush in 1988.

When Fox News was created in 1996, Australian-born tycoon Rupert Murdoch provided the money and Ailes the vision.

Ailes joins Television News Inc., a new right-leaning TV network that presaged Fox News. "He will be remembered by the many people on both sides of the camera that he discovered, nurtured and promoted".

"Roger was a great patriot who never ceased fighting for his beliefs". For better or worse, Ailes is credited with applying Hollywood and Madison Avenue to presidential politics, turning Nixon from a politician into a performer. Ailes had helped these campaigns navigate the new tides of media, changing politics in the process.

In his 1970 memo Ailes wrote: "Today television news is watched more often than people read newspapers, than people listen to the radio, than people read or gather any other form of communication". "He is in some ways a genius and in some ways tragic". And then came the idea of a network to fill what he, and as it would turn out millions of Americans, saw as a conservative void on cable news.

Ailes's political instincts aren't the only story behind FOX News's success. Their defense did little to staunch the widening scandal.

His decades-long run at Fox ended a year ago with his resignation, the first of several ousters from the network resulting from widespread accusations of sexual harassment and numerous settlements of claims brought by former Fox female employees.

Taibbi was also delusional enough to decry invective, which he should realize is his specialty, his calling card: "invective, like drugs or tobacco or any other addictive property, is a product of diminishing returns".

Using such tactics, Fox grew in popularity, eclipsing rivals Cable News Network and MSNBC.

Critics have long accused Ailes and Fox of stretching the meaning of the network's motto, "fair and balanced". For such a hateful, damaging man, it seems a gentle way to go.

Ailes was a brawler.

He was renowned for never giving in, for being ever confrontational with a chip on his shoulder and a blistering outburst at the ready. It was a preview of his Fox News credo that political correctness was to be shunned in favor of blunt, sometimes insensitive coverage of touchy issues. Hell, no. Will they try? In my book, I reported incidents early in Ailes's career in which he had asked female employees to trade sex for professional advancement - all of which he denied, of course. It was his crowning principle.

Ailes' whole career was built around one desire: to preserve and advance the dominance of affluent white men over everyone else. It was during Trump's triumphant week at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland last July that Ailes' tenure unraveled. With the departure of stars such as Megyn Kelly, Greta Van Susteren and Bill O'Reilly (himself the subject of multiple claims and settlements), Ailes leaves behind a much-diminished operation.

"Nothing serious", Ailes assured him.

In the 1980s, his skills as a television producer and political consultant fused.

It was there in 1967 that he and Nixon crossed paths in the meeting that changed both their lives. But Bill O'Reilly, who worked with Ailes for decades, blames the nation's "hatred" for his former boss's death.
