Lieberman Among the 4 Candidates Trump Will Interview for FBI Post

Joe Lieberman, the White House said Wednesday.

Former Oklahoma Gov. Frank Keating; Andrew McCabe, now the bureau's acting director; and Richard McFeely, a former top FBI official, also went to the White House for interviews on Wednesday.

These candidates have been sent over from the Department of Justice, the official said.

Three of the four candidates mentioned Wednesday were not among those names initially reported to be under consideration, with the DOJ conducting interviews with seven additional candidates over the weekend. A day earlier, Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy of SC also said he didn't want to be considered.

On Monday, Spicer told reporters that the process to replace fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey was being "driven by the Department of Justice" and that Trump would conduct interviews once there were recommendations. Rep Robert Aderholt R-AL says talk about Trump and Comey is all "speculation" pic.twitter.com/oBQL2MMlHv - Jamie Dupree (@jamiedupree) May 17, 2017 "It is very clear that a lot of people want to see the President distracted", Aderholt added to reporters gathered outside the offices of the Republican National Committee. "I'm not going to give any other comment on that".

"I think he would get 100 votes", Cornyn said.

Lieberman previously served as a senator from CT and was Al Gore's running mate in the 2000 presidential election. Mr. Lieberman, 75 years old, served as attorney general in CT before his election to the Senate in 1988, but has no federal law-enforcement experience, unlike past FBI directors. The veteran FBI official made headlines for his congressional testimony last week that rejected the White House's claim that Comey had lost the support of rank-and-file agents and for disputing the administration's characterization of an investigation into potential coordination between Russian Federation and the Trump White House.

Prior to Keating's two terms as governor of Oklahoma, 1995 to 2003, he was an F-B-I agent. John Cornyn of Texas, both Republicans; Alice Fisher, the former head of the Justice Department's criminal division; and Michael Garcia, a former US attorney from Manhattan. He later supervised the counterterrorism squad in Washington and ran a section within the criminal investigative division at headquarters.
