House committee sets hearing to investigate if Trump interfered in Federal Bureau of Investigation probe

Just earlier this week, after news broke that Trump had asked FBI Director James Comey to scrap the investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn in February, Chaffetz subpoenaed Comey's memos, and invited the ex-agency chief to testify next week before his committee. Comey has previously said he would only testify in an open session.

On Tuesday, shortly after the existence of memos by Mr. Comey was reported, Mr. Chaffetz sent a letter to Andrew McCabe, the acting director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, asking for all documents relating to communication between Mr. Trump and Mr. Comey. In the other letter, the committee asked McCabe for "any notes or memorandum" Comey prepared about any communications he had with senior White House or Department of Justice officials about Russia-related investigations.

In an interview with ABC's "Good Morning America" on Thursday, Chaffetz questioned the existence of Comey's memos involving President Donald Trump.

Chaffetz has refused to initiate probes into potential financial conflicts of interest in the Trump White House, as well as into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn's cozy ties to Russian Federation.

Both the House and Select Senate Intelligence Committees are investigating Russian attempts to manipulate the outcome of the 2016 US presidential election as well as allegations of collusion between members of the Trump campaign and high-ranking Russian officials.

Chaffetz, R-Utah, said Wednesday afternoon that he had yet to issue the invitation because Comey "evidently has a new (number)". Members of the Senate Judiciary Committee also planned to ask Comey to testify, The Hill reported.

In a separate letter, Rosenstein argued that it was his transgressions over the Clinton email investigation that were the cause of his dismissal, while laying out the reasons for Comey's firing.

"I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go", Mr. Trump told Comey, according to the memo.

Former acting Attorney General Sally Yates last week told a Senate Judiciary subcommittee that she warned the Trump administration 18 days before Flynn's termination that the retired lieutenant general may have been vulnerable to Russian blackmail. Mr. Chaffetz won 73% of the vote in the 2016 election and Utah's entire congressional delegation is Republican.
