Indian Army gets First Artillery Guns - Today (18th May 2017), the Indian Army got two artillery guns for the first time after about three decades.

In December 2016, India signed the $737 million (about 4,700 crores) deal with the US to purchase 145 M777 howitzers from the BAE Systems under a government-to-government contract.

According to the BAE Systems, two 155mm/39 calibre ultralight howitzers arrived here on a chartered flight.

New Orleans Uproots Third Confederate Statue In Early Morning Operation
The monuments, which were erected between 1884 and 1915, are seen by many residents as symbols of white supremacy and racism. The removal comes after the city had already taken down a statue of the confederacy's only president and one other memorial.

After these two guns, three M777 guns will come to India in September 2018 and used for training.

The Bofors scandal which took place during the prime ministership of Rajiv Gandhi, had severely crippled the Army's modernisation programme. The Bofors guns, which was found effective during the Kargil war, continue to be the mainstay.

The M-777 ultra light howitzers will be primarily used by the newly-raised Mountain Strike Corps in the northern borders of the country. US Government and BAE GCS Ltd with support of Indian Army.

Subsequent scandals revolving around other global artillery manufacturers, like South African Denel and Singapore Technology Kinetic's, further punched gaping holes in the army's long-range, high-volume firepower. Therefore, they can be carried by CH-47 Chinook helicopters and also on heavy lift aircraft like the C-17 Globemaster and the C-130 Hercules transporters.

The induction will commence from March 2019 onwards at the rate of five guns per month till complete consignment is received by mid-2021.
