The plan would, in theory, create a network of trade routes, rail lines, ports and highways, linking countries on four continents. While some see Beijing's project as a geopolitical powerplay, Xi has insisted that the Belt and Road is open to everybody.

After these two guns, three M777 guns will come to India in September 2018 and used for training.

The Bofors scandal which took place during the prime ministership of Rajiv Gandhi, had severely crippled the Army's modernisation programme. The Bofors guns, which was found effective during the Kargil war, continue to be the mainstay.

The M-777 ultra light howitzers will be primarily used by the newly-raised Mountain Strike Corps in the northern borders of the country. US Government and BAE GCS Ltd with support of Indian Army.

Subsequent scandals revolving around other global artillery manufacturers, like South African Denel and Singapore Technology Kinetic's, further punched gaping holes in the army's long-range, high-volume firepower. Therefore, they can be carried by CH-47 Chinook helicopters and also on heavy lift aircraft like the C-17 Globemaster and the C-130 Hercules transporters.

The induction will commence from March 2019 onwards at the rate of five guns per month till complete consignment is received by mid-2021.
