Economists are forecasting that the economy will expand at about 2.6 percent in the second quarter.

Many economists said that monthly gains in payroll would average approximately 170,000 during 2017 but that is more than sufficient to lower unemployment further. Applications for unemployment benefits have registered less than 300,000 for 113 straight weeks, the longest run since the early 1970s.

Windsor's jobless rate dipped from 5.2% in March to 4.9% last month. The unemployment rate fell to 4.4% from 4.5% in March, a historically low rate of unemployment.

The low level of claims is a key reason that economists think the slower pace of growth in the first quarter is a head-fake. This sets the Fed up for another rate hike in June.

According to statistics released by Stats Canada on Friday, Northeast B.C. continues to see a drop in the unemployment rate while the rate across the country is the lowest since 2008.

Orioles' Machado out of starting lineup vs. Tigers
The White Sox scored three in a wild ninth inning to extend the game, then took a 6-5 lead in the 11th on Tim Anderson's home run. The pitching matchup for tonight's game has Matt Boyd (2-3, 3.89 ERA) on the mound to face Wade Miley (1-1, 2.45) of the Orioles.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.4% for the week ending April 22, unchanged from the previous week's unrevised rate.

U.S. financial markets were little moved by the data. Employment in professional and business services, another office space driver, continued to trend up in April (gaining 39,000).

Employment rates in April rebounded better than expected, as employers added a solid 211,000 jobs. The layoffs were concentrated in the retail sector, which has been hit by store closures amid stiff competition from online retailers.

Economists have expressed optimism that the USA is strengthening in the current April-June quarter, fuelled by job growth, higher consumer confidence and stock-market records on promises of tax cuts and investment from President Trump.

Government payrolls jumped 17,000 last month.

Productivity declined at an annual rate of 0.6 percent in the January-March quarter after rising at a 1.8 percent rate in the fourth quarter, the Labor Department reported Thursday.
