'WannaCry' ransomware attack: What we know

More Than 75000 Ransomware Cyber Attacks Hit Nearly 100 Countries

"I'm anxious about how the numbers will continue to grow when people go to work and turn on their machines on Monday", Europol director Rob Wainwright told Britain's ITV television.

New Delhi, May 15 (IANS) It was coming. And, while the company did issue early fixes for its newer operating systems, patches for older Windows systems were only issued free of charge over the weekend, after the attacks began.

The vulnerability in the Microsoft Windows software - exploited by "WannaCrypt" - crippled computers from hospitals in Britain to police stations in India, with hackers demanding hundreds of dollars from the users for them to regain control over their data.

Close to 150 countries have been affected by this pandemic, which is infecting older versions of the Windows operating system.

About 97 percent of United Kingdom facilities and doctors disabled by the attack were back to normal operation, Home Secretary Amber Rudd said Saturday after a government meeting.

Further, legal experts claim that this category of users suffering losses incurred from WannaCry will not be able to report losses due to the use of pirated software. Security patches would be available for clients with older machines, but only if they paid for custom support agreements. Ransomware encrypts the files and software of a computer and charges a "ransom", usually paid in BitCoin, to decrypt it.

While security experts have warned for years that a massive global cyberattack was possible.

Prasad said a cyber coordination centre will start operating from next month to take precautions against such attacks in future. "If Kaspersky Lab's solution is used, ensure that it includes the "System Watcher", a behavioural proactive detection component and that it is switched on", Altaf Halde, Managing Director of Kaspersky Lab (South Asia), told IANS. Amid all this, India remained unaffected by the WannaCry Ransomware.

"We can certainly expect follow-on attacks". They should also use the indicators of compromise which are associated with this activity. You will want to have multiple backups, with the ability to rollback to any point in time, and these should not be connected to the source machine, or they could get encrypted as well.

Cyber attack could spark lawsuits but not against Microsoft
The Cert-In advisories have suggested that computer users create backup for critical data and preserve it offline. The hackers remain anonymous for now, but it appears that they are amateurs.

"We have seen vulnerabilities stored by the Central Intelligence Agency show up on WikiLeaks, and now this vulnerability stolen from the NSA has affected customers around the world", he wrote.

The news led software security providers to ramp up anti-malware software.

"Using outdated versions of Windows that are no longer supported raises a lot of questions", Dore explained. Given the potential impact to customers and their businesses, we have also released updates for Windows XP, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2003.

"Disable SMBv1 (a server component) with the steps documented at "Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 2696547" and as recommended previously".

He said the crisis could develop "at a significant scale" in coming days.

"This is big and set to get bigger". So far, F-Secure hasn't provided more details. It could have been used to wipe out the data on computers it infected.

Always make sure your files are backed up.

Interior Ministry: The Russian Interior Ministry acknowledged a ransomware attack on its computers, adding that less than 1% of computers were affected. The U.S. spying agency has declined to comment on the matter.

Remember this: "WannaCrypt" probably won't work across the internet for PCs behind a firewall or router. It takes just one click on an infected link or email attachment to have the virus spread to other computers within the network.
