Singapore shuts airport terminal after fire; flights delayed

A fire broke out in a room holding air-conditioning equipment, leading to an unprecedented evacuation at Changi Airport Terminal 2 (T2) on Tuesday (May 16), Todayonline reported.

The Changi Airport has 3 terminals for the passengers and another Terminal is under construction and would be open to the public this year.

"We expect significant delays to departing and arriving flights at Changi Airport this evening", it said.

Changi Airport said on its Facebook page that the cause of the fire had been identified, but did not provide further details.

"We will advise when operations resume", it said.

Police said the fire alarm was activated at around 5:40pm (0940 GMT) as smoke poured from air vents.

The fire was immediately extinguished however the impacted created huge smoke and three people were admitted to the hospital for the inhalation.

No one else was hurt but officers from the SCDF's DART who had to rappel down the half-completed building of the Global Indian International School to bring the two men to safety.
