Haley: US Might Look at Sanctions on Countries Aiding North Korea

Beijing has so far halted coal imports from North Korea and has begun talks with the US on possible new United Nations sanctions, according to Reuters.

Han Min-koo told South Korea's parliament the test-launch had been detected by the controversial U.S. THAAD anti-missile system, whose deployment in the South has infuriated China.

In the aftermath of North Korea's test on Sunday of its new Hwasong-12 missile, which an analyst told NK News had "very serious implications", Haley said the us would look to "tighten the screws" on North Korea and implied new sanctions were being discussed.

Haley said, "Sadly, it wouldn't be a surprise", and called on every country to take action.

Han said Sunday's test-launch was "successful in flight".

"We are willing to talk but not until a total stop of the nuclear process and of any tests there", Ms Haley said.

The U.S. responded to the launch on Saturday by reaffirming its commitment to tightening sanctions against the North and urging the global community to do the same.

China has strongly opposed THAAD, whose radar it fears could be used to spy into its territory, despite assurances from Washington that THAAD is purely defensive.

"At least 12 South Korean companies have been hit by the WannaCry computer virus", NPR's Lauren Frayer reports from Seoul.

"It could be counterproductive for the North Koreans".

Japanese Ambassador Koro Bessho, center, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, left and Korean Ambassador Tae-yul Cho speak to reporters before a Security Council meeting on the situation in North Korea, Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at United Nations headquarters.

A group with ties to North Korea is thought to be responsible for a series of attacks on financial institutions.

"I would like to confirm that we are categorically against the expansion of the club of nuclear states, including through the Korean Peninsula", Putin said, according to Russian news agency Sputnik.

Trusts were told about security patch last month — NHS cyberattack
The company said the virus has been localized and "technical work is underway to destroy it and update the antivirus protection". Ransomware is a type of malware that blocks access to a computer or its data and demands money from the user to release it.

The missile flew 787 km (489 miles) on a trajectory reaching an altitude of 2,111.5 km (1,312 miles), KCNA said.

"Because if you're supporting North Korea, you're against the rest of the worldwide community".

FireEye Inc (FEYE.O), another large cyber security firm, said it was also investigating but cautious about drawing a link to North Korea.

Washington, she said, would consider talks with Pyongyang only if the country halted all nuclear and ballistic missile tests. Its missile program is also a money-making operation, but its ability to sell weapons overseas is hampered by United Nations sanctions.

And so far, Beijing has amped up talk of imposing new sanctions or other restrictions.

In a unanimous statement backed by China, the council on Monday agreed to take further significant measures, including sanctions.

The attack includes elements that belong to the U.S. National Security Agency and were leaked online last month.

"But I don't think we can say it hasn't impacted this region to the extent it has some other regions". China really is the key in dealing with the North Korea issue. "Perhaps Symantec has more to go on than us at this point, but we are not seeing a DPRK link with the WannaCry worm campaign at this point".

In all, six sets of sanctions have been imposed on North Korea since it first tested an atomic device in 2006.

Pyongyang has carried out two atomic tests and dozens of missile launches since the beginning of past year in its quest to develop a missile capable of delivering a nuclear warhead to the continental United States. North Korea has also launched satellites into orbit on long-range rockets that share some of the same technology as missiles. Rates for the United States, Japan, Germany and Britain range from 18 to 22 percent.

Two law enforcement officials say US investigators suspect North Korea may be behind the global "ransomware" attack.

There were no new, major incidents in the United States.
