Cyber attack could spark lawsuits but not against Microsoft

EternalBlue and EsteemAudit are among several zero-day exploits released last month by a group calling itself the Shadow Brokers, although EternalBlue is believed to be the most powerful among them. "Following this, Microsoft had sent patches in its update in March itself to counter this particular form of threats", Udhav told TNM. "Software updates and security patches are pushed to us as needed so that we are using the most current approved versions of software on our computers".

The attack has not only put patients' lives at risk, but also highlighted the clear-cut and scary reality about IT infrastructure in healthcare sector.

This unprecedented malware attack began sweeping the globe late last week, and security researchers estimated that almost 57,000 computers in more than 150 countries were infected by the end of the day on Friday. The badly affected National Health Service in United Kingdom said seven out of 47 trusts that were hit were still facing serious issues.

In England, some hospitals were forced to cancel procedures and appointments, as ambulances were directed to neighbouring hospitals that had avoided the attack, according to BBC reports. The outdated version of Windows XP, that the ransomware managed to exploit, is used by nearly 70 per cent of Indian ATMs.

"The best way to pre-empt a Wannacry malware attack is: shut down your computer, if it runs on Windows XP operating system, for the next couple of days", says cyber forensic expert P. Vinod Bhattathirippad. So even people with older computers should update them.

Do you know how to keep your computer safe from cyber attacks? It not, you can go to the Microsoft website and find the proper patch to download.

Researchers at Check Point spotted a new variant of WannaCry that used a different kill switch domain (it pings it and if it finds it isn't registered, it activates the ransomware; for more details, check out the original post on this behavior).

A FedEx spokesperson confirmed to ABC News that it was among the victims of the attack.

"You can point a lot of fingers, but I think given that this was not a zero-day vulnerability (for which no patch is available), the people hacked are to blame", said Robert Cattanach, a partner at the worldwide law firm Dorsey & Whitney and an expert on cybersecurity and data breaches.

Europol, the EU's policing arm, warned that the cyberattack, known as "WannaCry", will continue to wreak havoc this week as people return to work and log onto their PCs.
