Australia has "better health care than we do"

During a meeting on Thursday night with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, Trump began with what he probably thought was a simultaneous plug for the American Health Care Act and scathing takedown of the Affordable Care Act.

President Donald Trump has praised Australia's single-payer health care system, describing it as superior to the USA model. And it does this all while providing health care to everyone in society - something that America's system, even with Obamacare still in place, does not.

House leaders came through with the votes to give Trump a major political win more than a month after Republicans' first attempt to pass a health care bill went down in a humiliating defeat.

"To Anthony Pratt who just pledged $2 billion, and that's peanuts for Anthony if you know Anthony", he said to laughs. This year Canadian provinces will receive $37.1 billion CAD ($26.9 billion USD) from the country's federal government to pay for their health care system.

"I think he was simply being complimentary of the prime minister, and I don't think it was much more than that", Huckabee-Sanders said.

Trump and Turnbull also downplayed a testy phone exchange that began their working relationship as they met face to face aboard the aircraft carrier Intrepid in Manhattan, The New York Times reported. "We're focused on a healthcare plan that works here".

"Thank you, Mr. President", Sanders continued.

Trump Asked Comey To Shut Down Flynn Investigation, Reports Say
But top White House officials were evidently aware that the disclosure might constitute a misstep. Trump ignored reporters' questions about whether he disclosed classified information.

U.S. President Donald Trump and Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull are aiming to put a rocky start behind when they meet for the first time and commemorate the 75th anniversary of an important World War II battle.

Their earlier encounter, an acrimonious first phone call in January, was spoiled by Trump's hostile reaction to a deal with Australia that his predecessor Barack Obama negotiated in the final weeks of his second term.

In dinner remarks after their meeting, Turnbull celebrated the unity of spirit that brought the two countries together against Japan in World War Two, and said Australia and the United States are united against North Korea's nuclear and missile programs and are fighting together in Afghanistan.

White House officials said the US-Australia refugee deal still stood, but remained a "raw nerve" for Mr Trump. It said it based this on estimates of similar activities from the US Government Accountability Office, the township of Bedminster and the conservative group Judicial Watch.

Q&A: Now that it has passed the house, what's in the Republican health care bill?

Asked about the comments during an interview on U.S. television, Sanders could not contain his laughter, saying: "Alright, the President has just said it".
