UN Security Council condemns North Korea's missiles tests

What's worrying to the United States, among other countries, is that if this missile were fired at a different trajectory, it could have reached the US Andersen Air Force Base in Guam, according to aerospace engineer John Schilling's 38 North blog, which is published by the US Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins University.

"It appears to have not only demonstrated an intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) that might enable them to reliably strike the United States base at Guam, but more importantly, may represent a substantial advance to developing an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM)", it said.

The missile flew more than 435 miles before splashing into waters early Sunday between Japan and the Korean Peninsula.

The North fired a ballistic missile that landed in the sea near Russian Federation on Sunday in a launch that Washington called a message to South Korea, days after its new president took office pledging to engage Pyongyang in dialogue.

North Korea has boasted of a successful weekend launch of a new type of "medium long-range" ballistic rocket that can carry a heavy nuclear warhead.

The new ballistic missile, named Hwasong-12, was sacked at the highest possible angle to avoid affecting neighboring countries' security and flew 787 kilometers after reaching an altitude of 2,111 kilometers, KCNA said. The country's dictator Kim Jong Un is warning (he's done it before) that the country is well on its way to striking the US mainland and military bases throughout the Pacific Ocean.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reacts with members of the Korean People's Army scientists and engineers in this undated photo released by North Korea's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on May 15, 2017. Some outside analysts believe the Hwasong-12 missile, if proven in further tests, could help North Korea achieve its goal of developing missiles with nuclear warheads capable of reaching the US mainland. The United States and China are reportedly working on a new even tougher resolution.

Last week the South elected a new president, Moon Jae-In, who advocates reconciliation with Pyongyang and said at his inauguration that he was willing "in the right circumstances" to visit the North to ease tensions.

OH chief died exiting vehicle at nursing home shooting
ORIGINAL: ( NBC News ) - Four people, including a police chief and a gunman, are dead following a shooting at an OH nursing home. The Columbus Dispatch reports (http://bit.ly/2qFMaJ7 ) that Cindy Krantz is being remembered as a kind person who loved her kids.

Tensions between the U.S. and North Korea reached a peak in recent weeks, with Washington saying military action was an option under consideration and Pyongyang issuing threats of its own.

Council diplomats say the USA and China, the North's closest ally, have been working on a new sanctions resolution.

The United States called the missile launch a message to South Korea, days after Moon took office pledging to engage Pyongyang in dialogue and keep up global pressure to impede the North's arms pursuit.

Trump also has sought to enlist Chinese President Xi Jinping's help in preventing North Korea from escalating development of its weapons program.

Kim had told the scientists and technicians involved "not to be complacent" but to build further "nuclear weapons and methods of delivery" until the USA made "the right choice", KCNA said in its report. It again demanded that Pyongyang conduct no further nuclear or ballistic missile tests.

Could North Korea launch a nuclear missile?

The Trump administration has given mixed signals about his approach to the North, vowing to keep the possibility of military action on the table and deploying several warships in the region, while pledging to pursue a more diplomatic policy of "maximum pressure and engagement".
