US Federal Prosecutors Charge Israeli Man With JCC Bomb Threats
An Israeli-American teenager accused of making dozens of bomb threats to Jewish community centres has been identified for the first time in two criminal complaints filed on Friday in US courts in Florida and Georgia.Michael Ron David Kadar, who has dual citizenship and lives in Israel, made at least 245 threatening telephone calls between January 4 and March 7, with a significant portion of them targeting Jewish community centres in the United States, according to the complaints.Authorities have not publicly offered a possible motive.
Kadar has also been connected to threats to schools and residents in Athens, Ga.
BuzzFeed News reached out to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and DOJ on Friday to ask if United States officials plan to request extradition for Kadar to be brought to the US.
Kadar also targeted facilities in Jacksonville, Fort Myers, Orlando and other cities, the complaint said.
Michael Ron David Kadar was charged by federal authorities in Florida and Georgia on Friday, a month after his arrest in Israel.
Four Tampa-area locations were named as places Kadar is accused of calling, according to a list contained in the complaint.
He was arrested in Israel in March after a joint investigation by the FBI and Israeli police.
In Georgia, Kadar is accused of placing a January 3 call to a police department alleging a violent emergency at a private residence in Athens, Georgia. The DOJ said Friday that Kadar took extraordinary steps to hide his identity online.
"This is one of the things the judge told the police to check, to talk to his doctors, to get more documents and to investigate him according to his medical situation", said attorney Galit Bash. When asked what threats, he replied the "JCC threats". Though no explosives were ever found, the threats did force temporary closures and lockdowns of the centers.
The calls stoked fears of rising anti-Semitism.
The authorities who raided Kadar's house confiscated computers, antennas, and other sophisticated equipment used to make robocall threats around the world.
BuzzFeed News tallied more than 100 threats that have been made to Jewish Community Centers and schools around the USA since the start of 2017.
Kadar allegedly used an online service that masks caller ID and distorts the caller's voice.
