Mallya, 61, who has been declared a wilful defaulter on loan tied to his defunct Kingfisher Airlines, was arrested in London today on a request by the Indian government, a year after he left the country. Mallya's revoked passport will also be retained until further orders of the court.

Senior Indian officials described his arrest as the first salvo in the case, which will now involve a legal process in the United Kingdom to determine if Mr Mallya can be extradited to India to face charges in Indian courts.

"The government and all its agencies are certainly putting their best efforts.the investigating agencies believe an offence has been commited, for which the person is required in India", he added. The next hearing of the case will be on May 17.

Hours after business tycoon Vijay Mallya was arrested in London by Scotland Yard on India's request and released on bail, the Congress tore into the BJP government asking why it did not seek his deportation.

Dispute Over Aaron Hernandez's Brain Highlights Push for CTE Awareness
The state medical examiner's office declined to comment on the status of its autopsy or the release of Hernandez's body. Asked if Hernandez's fate - at the time, life in prison - was also heartbreaking, Belichick responded: "Yes".

A Metropolitan Police statement said officers from the Extradition Unit arrested Mallya on an extradition warrant from India. In the notices issued to 17 companies for taking loans from banks to finance the airline, the SFIO sought to know the source of the funds. "During Lok Sabha elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had talked about bringing black money back. and of strong steps against economic offenders", he said. Surjewala said the government's sincerity of objective would be proved only when Mallya and Modi are brought back to India.

On February 8, the Indian government handed over to British authorities a formal request for Mallya's extradition, saying it had a legitimate case against him on charges of financial irregularities and loan default.

The kick-off of the extradition hearing, albeit a long-drawn legal battle, is a big booster for the Indian government, which has been striving to bring Mallya to justice here for defaulting on over Rs 9,000-crore worth of loans. "We want to shatter this myth that by crossing boundaries you are out of bounds". His Indian advocates B Munim and Desai are expected to assist in the proceedings, says a Times of India report. "Mallya extradition will act as an important test case", the source said.
