Trump, alongside Italian PM, says no USA role in Libya

But though Trump defined the U.S. and Italy as "vital allies", particularly when it came to fighting terror, he appeared to disagree with Gentiloni on the role of the United States in stabilizing Libya.

"I think we're in good shape", Mr. Trump said during a brief press appearance before reporters in the Oval Office.

"I do see a role in getting rid of [the Islamic State group], we're very effective in that regard". While Gentiloni wants Western allies to solve the migrant crisis together, President Trump said, "I do not see a role in Libya".

"We are used to respecting our commitments", Gentiloni said.

Trump says he is not involved in that decision-making process, but would support Attorney General Jeff Sessions if he charged Assange with a crime.

Gentiloni met U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington Thursday. "And we have to be strong and we have to be vigilant, and I've been saying it for a long time".

Earlier Thursday North Korea's state run media reported Kim Jong Un threatening a "super-mighty preemptive strike" that could "immediately wipe out the US mainland".

Fighting terrorism and in particular "uprooting Daesh" is one of the top priorities in the Mediterranean area, he said.

Regulator Ofcom nails BT over rivals' access to telegraph poles
Providers will be able to use Openreach's infrastructure to build their own networks, rather than relying on existing cabling. Ofcom Competition Policy Director Yih-Choung Teh said: "People increasingly need fast, reliable broadband".

"A divided country and in conflict would make stability worse, the United States' role in this is very critical", he said.

Trump is to start his first foreign trip in Brussels at the annual meeting of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation alliance on May 25, and then travel to Taormina in Sicily the next day.

Trump welcomed Gentiloni to the White House on Thursday for the first meeting between the two leaders and said he looked forward to traveling to Sicily next month for the first G-7 summit of his presidency, where leaders of the world's seven most developed economies will meet for rounds of powerhouse diplomacy. Gentiloni insisted he wasn't singling out the US president - even though he appeared to drop hints in that direction from the moment of his first public handshake with Trudeau.

Trump also sharply denounced the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and promised to address it further in the "not-too-distant future".

Gentiloni has strongly criticized protectionist trade policies, such as those proposed by Trump's administration, that advocate shielding a country's domestic industries from foreign competition by taxing imports.

Trump expressed "our condolences from our country to the people of France".

Trump said the U.S. will play no part in helping stabilise the war-ravaged nation. "Again, it's happening it seems", Trump said, adding that he saw reports of it when he was first walking in. Trump has complained that the United States contributes more to the military alliance than it receives. But he stopped short of demanding that funding for the project be included in a spending bill Congress must pass by the end of next week in order to keep the government running.
