Patriots, James White agree to three-year contract extension

White, a fourth-round draft pick in 2014, had one more year on his rookie contract.

A busy Tuesday has finished with a bang tonight as the Patriots have re-signed running back James White to a three-year extension, rewarding him for his contributions mainly in the passing game. He still wasn't very effective as a pure running back, but his average per carry did double, and he proved in the Super Bowl that he could break a tackle when he took it in for the winning touchdown run in overtime.

The New England Patriots may also still look to add a running back in the upcoming NFL Draft. White scored his third touchdown and the game-winner.

"James White is like my oldest son", New England Patriots veteran star quarterback Tom Brady said after the Super Bowl 51.

White, a third-year running back who was inactive for the 2014 Super Bowl, had his best game of the season in the Pats' championship-clinching comeback against Atlanta, catching a record 14 passes for 110 yards and a touchdown and rushing for 29 yards and two more TDs, including the victor in overtime. You can never get mad at him, because even when he doesn't make the play he feels worse about it than you do. However, White retained his role and finished the season with 166 rushing yards, 551 receiving yards and five receiving touchdowns. New England reportedly still has an offer on the table for LeGarrette Blount to return. The team also signed Rex Burkhead to a one-year contract, and just today extended an offer sheet to restricted free agent Mike Gilleslee.
