Indiana GOP announces details of tax-hiking roads plan

A bill allowing those with protective orders to obtain and carry a gun without a license was passed to Gov. Eric Holcomb for a final signature Friday

In making the announcement, House Speaker Brian Bosma, R-Indianapolis, called the funding agreement "the strongest, absolutely best infrastructure program in our state's history".

Through a new $15 annual fee on all vehicles, a $150 annual fee on electric vehicles and $50 for hybrids registered in the state, local governments would also receive road funding through Indiana's Community Crossing Matching Grant Fund.

In addition, the state's sales tax on gasoline is expected to be shifted from the general fund into roads by 2025.

The session began with estimates that $1.2 billion would be needed annually for roads over a 20-year period.

"We believe we have met our mutual goals of long term, comprehensive road funding", he said. Several other vehicle fees will be included.

Shifting nomination from voters to the governor, critics say, means education would become one of many topics discussed in a gubernatorial election, instead of a separate discussion surrounding voters' selection of an independent schools chief.

Trump raps Iran as violating 'spirit' of nuclear deal
Tillerson's language was similar to that used by other top Trump administration officials to describe the new USA policy toward North Korea.

Republicans agree on hiking the tax on gasoline and diesel and imposing some new fees.

"If Hoosiers are convinced that the money is exclusively going for roads, they are willing to pay an extra dime at the pump", Bosma said, citing polls and town hall discussions.

The sponsor, House Speaker Brian Bosma, R-Indianapolis, said he would prefer that the governor elected in 2020 get to pick his or her own leader for the Indiana Department of Education.

The sticking points have been House proposals to raise cigarette taxes and shift all sales tax revenues also charged on fuel purchases to infrastructure funding. She notes IN is still conducting a promised study of whether preschool delivers the anticipated benefits, and says that study will produce better results with students from a wider variety of backgrounds.

IN would need federal approval to expand tolling on interstates. We don't know the form it's going to take. But both measures still need to be approved by both chambers and were among a crush of key bills that had yet to be brought up for final votes.
